Chapter 40

Stuart Hunter called his brother from New York. His stateside tour was going well and he needed more clothes from his extensive wardrobe. His room at Onslow Square had become a shrine to his success. His father revelled in the notoriety his son was providing. His brother, however, did hold some sibling rivalry resentment toward his success. He was not blessed with the voice or natural charm his brother found so easy to present. But there was a plus side. The parties he would accompany his famous brother to, as part of his entourage, which held its own kind of kudos. The top stars he met, shaking hands with, socially mingling, seemingly as equals, smoothed the edges of envy. He was having great times. The bonus was for him to be involved. A degree in business studies, which did not hold the same level of social cachet. He was more his mother’s son.

Tamhas Hunter knew he could not keep up with his twin brother, the shyness he was cursed with leaving him no alternative than to work for his father. The money and the cars were great. The perks of being the boss’s son gave him a boosted elevated status he could live with. The reflected glory of his sibling made his lifestyle way above what he could ever have achieved on his own.

The call came to the London Onslow Square house, the urgency from his erstwhile second boss had proclaimed a need which gave a sting to his feeling, of ‘Drop what you are doing, and get over here now.’

Stuart paid the bills and the flights, ‘So stop complaining’ the verbal self-rebuke registering with his inner strife.

Tamhas packed Stuart’s clothes, the scribbled list taken down. The flight was already booked, all he had to do was turn up.

After letting his father know where he would for the next few days, boarding the business class flight to New York, he endured with a champagne meal. The taxi from JFK airport dropped him at the Renaissance hotel 714 Seventh Avenue. The busy New York streets buzzed with a cacophony of activity. As he slid out of the taxi, the air vibrancy took his breath away. He needed a drink, the flight always too long.

Tamhas checked in and went straight to his room. He called his brother and fell asleep. The room on the sixth floor was high enough to lose some of the road noise. Not being a good traveller, the fatigue of the journey hit him like a brick.

The knock on the door awoke him too soon. He looked at the clock by his bed; 11.46 pm. He opened the door, languishing in a crumpled shirt. The vision of his brother and a girl he had only known for just two hours took him by surprise. A tall blonde girl stood hanging on to Stuart, too young and petite for his brother. A stage door pick-up, chosen and supplied by his manager. The overdressed couple, his star brother dressed in his stage clothes, unapologetically grinning at him.
