CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

The following morning when they left the house, June took Hannah’s hand instead of Nathan’s. Nathan walked ahead, while Hannah and June had to practically jog to keep up with him.

After they left June safely at the entrance to her school, Nathan once again started hurrying away from Hannah.

Furious, Hannah seized him by the elbow and pulled him to a stop, spinning him around. He looked down at her, shocked at her outburst. Hannah had even shocked herself. “I don’t know why you don’t like me Nathan, and the truth is, I don’t even care, but we are supposed to walk to school together. If you prefer, we don’t, then tell me now, so I know, and I do not have to run after you like a puppy dog.”

The look on his face went from astonishment and shock to apprehension and pleasure, before returning to the usual grumpy look. “I can’t be late for school. I already have two demerits.”

He walked on and Hannah hurried to catch up to him. She called from behind him, “Two demerits!”

He continued walking silently.

“What for?” Hannah insisted.

“Fighting.” He walked even faster and stayed a foot or two ahead of Hannah the rest of the way to school.

At school, Maya ignored Hannah, because she did not have to show her around anymore.

Belinda yelped excitedly when she saw Hannah. “So after nearly two days here, how do you like your new school?”

“It’s okay. The teachers are nice.”

“Are the boys better looking here?”

“I haven’t had a chance to look.”

Belinda looked at her sceptically. “There is a beach party Saturday night. It will give you the chance to meet some boys.”

“I don’t know if I’ll be allowed to go. I’ll ask my Aunt.”

“Don’t tell her where you’re going, or she won’t let you go. Tell her you are coming to my house to study for a test. That always works.”

“I don’t like to lie.”

Belinda smirked, “You haven’t lived with the Mitchell’s long. Soon you will get so used to lying; you’ll have no choice but to like it.”

The bell rang and as Hannah walked into her first class, someone bumped into her. Hannah turned to look into the most perfect face, she had ever seen. His blue eyes were dazzling while his smile was warm and sweet. Strong, full lips turned up gently at the corners and a wave of dark hair floated over his forehead. He was tall and broad in the shoulders with a narrow waist.

“Excuse me,” he said. “Did you get hurt?”

“No. I’m fine.”

“You are the new girl, right?”

“Yes.” Hannah smiled shyly.

“I am Adrian Steward.”

“Hannah Mitchell.”

“Welcome.” He smiled radiantly. “Are you going to the beach party on Saturday night?”

“I don’t know. I’ll see.”

“I hope I see you there.” He moved away to join his friends, who included a pretty brunette. The girl glared at Hannah as she threaded her arm through his and moved him down the hall and away.

Hannah stared at him until Belinda nudged her. “Be careful, that’s Adrian Steward.”

“He told me.”

“He is trying to break some kind of record of taking the most girls to bed.
