Dante sat in her car outside Trent’s home for a long time deliberating what she should do next. She knew she didn’t want to go back to the apartment and see Takira with Kelis again. She didn’t want to fall back on old habits, drowning herself in alcohol to try to erase the devastating kiss she’d witnessed between them. Dante just needed to be anywhere but where she’d come to consider home.

Dante knew there was only one place she could go. One person she could trust with how she felt.

Trent opened her front door to Dante with a smile that faded the longer she looked at her. She ushered Dante in silently.

“I apologize for it being so late. I just didn’t know where else to go and you’d given me your address so it was either come here or go to a bar. I can’t afford to drink a place dry or deal with the hangover I’d get for trying.”

“What’s wrong?” She sat beside Dante. “What happened?”

“I think I made a huge mistake coming back here.” Dante rubbed a hand over her face roughly. “I should have stayed away and just continued the way I was. I was happy.”

Trent grabbed them both a beer from the fridge and handed Dante one. Dante held it between her hands and just stared at it.

“After Chloe, I never dared open my heart to anyone else. I had my chances while I was traveling, but I just couldn’t risk it. Besides, they were pretty enough, some were totally hot, but they weren’t what I wanted. One-night stands aren’t my thing, and I was passing through so many places I just shut that part of my life off. After a while I didn’t miss it. You can’t miss what you don’t have, right?”

Trent just nodded and let Dante talk.

“Then I came home and it’s been a challenge. A welcome one but a challenge nonetheless. A new job, new place to live, new colleagues, living with a young child. Do you know Takira asked me one day why I was so kind to him? It’s not like I have much experience being around a kid, but I looked into his eyes and saw the man he could be. I don’t want him to suffer the kind of upbringing you and I had. I want nothing but positive experiences for him. Happy memories from now on. No one knows how his mother treated him, and his grandmother doesn’t sound like the kind of woman to be left to raise a baby. But Takira is trying so hard, even though it wasn’t what she wanted at all. And the timing sucked coming so close on the heels of that bastard stealing her money. But she’s making sure Finn’s cared for and loved.” Dante twisted the top off her beer and took a long drink. “I love that kid, Trent. He’s a tiny sponge soaking up everything and anything he can acquire. I never thought of kids as something I’d ever want in my life.
