Cody got up early the next morning and hurried into town. He wanted to smooth things over with Bethany. He had a feeling that she wasn’t too happy about his critique yesterday. He was trying so hard to act professional and not show his favoritism to Bethany, especially in front of the principal. As the school’s safety advisor, it was his job to make sure all faculty and students knew how to prepare in case of emergency. He hoped she understood and wasn’t too upset with him.

He peeked into the window of Lover’s Landing to see Bethany sitting at her table, alone. Thank the heavens Austin wasn’t with her. He took a deep breath, walked inside, and joined her at her table. She was reading a book and didn’t look up once when the door chime went off.

“Good morning,” he said as she was still staring into her book, not looking at him.

“Good morning,” she said as she continued to read.

“Mind if I sit down?” he asked.

“No, I don’t mind,” she said, but she still refused to look at him.

“Okay.” He sighed, sitting down in front of her.

“Must be a good book.” He laughed, hoping it would get her to finally look at him.

“It is,” she said.

“Can I get you some more coffee?” he asked.

“Nope. I’m good.” She held up her cup and took a sip before setting it back down.

Cody felt like he was talking to a stranger rather than his best friend. It was obvious she was still sore about yesterday.

“Bethany, about yesterday,” he said.

She finally looked at him and put down her book, giving him her full attention.

“I know you are upset about what I said yesterday. It wasn’t personal. I was doing my job.”

“So, your job is to criticize me in front of my boss?” she asked.

“I didn’t criticize you. I just said you needed to work on your time, that’s all,” he said, starting to get defensive.

“You did, too. Do you know how hard it is to corral a kindergarten class, especially so early in the school year?”

“No, but it’s your responsibility as their teacher to get them out of the building safely.”

“I realize that, but you didn’t have to be such a jerk about it.” She shrugged and went back to reading.

“I wasn’t being a jerk.” He tried to defend himself once again, but she refused to look at him. Was I a jerk yesterday? He wasn’t going to lie to himself, he had been jealous. Ever since her date with Austin, he had tried not to let it bother him, but it did. He had waited all this time for her to come home and to get his chance, and Austin swooped in. It was obvious to him that she would never be interested in being more than friends, but that didn’t mean he wanted to lose her as a friend.

“I'm sorry if you feel I was being a jerk to you. I assure you, your safety and the safety of the children are my only priority.
