Chapter 17

Lisa waited at the railing at the top of the stairs and scanned the passengers until she saw a grinning Amy approaching her from the concourse. Her flight arrived on time at 8:05 in the evening. Lisa thought she had held her own tan until she saw Amy. Amy’s bronzed skin was even darker than it had been in Arizona.

“Good to see you again,” Lisa said. She gave Amy a quick hug.

“Good to see you, too.”

They started downstairs to the baggage carousel. “Did you bring much with you?”

“Nah. Only one suitcase and this carry-on.”

Silence hung between them while they waited for the suitcase to make its appearance. They had talked frequently on the phone, but it had been almost two months since they had last seen each other.

“There it is.” Amy pointed at a red suitcase.

“Here, let me get it.” Lisa lifted it off the carousel… and nearly broke her arm. That’s what she got for trying to be butch. “Damn, Amy. What do you have in here?”

“Oh, it’s not that heavy.”

Lisa grunted. “If you say so.”

They walked to the garage. After they settled into the car, Amy took Lisa’s hand and squeezed it. “I’ve missed you.”

Amy’s hand on top of hers felt different. And it wasn’t because of the rough skin which was even more calloused since Lisa saw her last. It was something else. “I’ve missed you, too.” But Lisa’s heart wasn’t in it when she said the words.

On the drive to the apartment, Amy told Lisa about the training in Florida.

“Bob Stoltz is the guy who’s been helping me with my hitting, trying to get me to pull the ball more on inside pitches. He keeps saying, ‘You’ve got power there, Perry, don’t be shy in using it.’”
