Cora

“So, did you figure it out?”

I looked at Ben, who was currently standing on the opposite side of the kitchen island cleaning up from dinner, and asked, “Figure what out?”

“Your dilemma with the chocolate dicks,” he clarified. “I was just curious if you’d done any official research yet.”

I gave him a disbelieving look. “Suddenly you’re okay discussing this with me?”

“I wasn’t ever not okay discussing it,” he insisted. “The timing just wasn’t exactly ideal. Do you know what it was like for me to go into that call after I got those texts from you? I couldn’t stop thinking about you talking to me like that.”

I jerked my head back and worried, “Did I offend you?”

Now it was Ben’s turn to give me an incredulous look. “Are you seriously asking me that question? Do you honestly believe that I’d have brought it up just now if it offended me?”

I shrugged. “I guess not.”

Ben continued to load dishes into the dishwasher as a moment of silence stretched between us. “Well?” he prompted.

“Well, what?”

“Did you figure it out?” he repeated his earlier question.

With a look of uncertainty, I disclosed, “The jury is still out. But the supplies for testing are on their way.”

“You’ll keep me updated, right?”

Smiling, I assured him, “Of course.”

Ben gave me an approving nod and returned his attention back to the task at hand. Considering he’d managed to find a way to talk to me about something from my week, I figured it was necessary for me to do the same. Unfortunately, the one thing that he spoke about all week was the big account he was hoping to land. That meant I was going to have to bring up Lisa.

“Um, I hope you don’t think I was eavesdropping, but it was kind of hard not to hear. Would I be correct to assume that your meeting tonight was about the big account you’ve been stressed about all week?”

“You would be correct,” he declared.

“And it sounded like you got the account,” I continued.

“I did,” he confirmed.

A big part of me was truly happy for him, so I couldn’t help myself from sharing that. “Congratulations,” I praised him. But because the other part of me secretly didn’t like Lisa for the simple fact that she was beautiful, had been alone with Ben when we were supposed to be having dinner, and that she didn’t even try to hide that she was into him, I added, “I honestly don’t understand why you were even worried.”

“I wouldn’t say I was worried,” he corrected me. “I was trying to be positive, while also remaining realistic. There was no guarantee that we’d land the account.”

“Well, if Lisa is the woman who owned the account, I’m telling you that you really had nothing to worry about.”

Confusion washed over him. “What do you mean?” he asked.

I laughed. When I looked at Ben, I realized he genuinely had no idea what I was getting at. I wiped the smile off my face and explained, “That woman has got it bad for you.
