“Okay,” I whispered. “Can you not tell Gideon for now? I don’t want to freak him out and send him running back to France.”

“My lips are sealed.”

CHAPTER 15

“FABULOUS, DOLL. TAKE a look in the mirror.”

I tiptoed across my bedroom in stockinged feet, all the way to the ornate cheval mirror in the far corner. Bradley had picked out my dress, not something I’d ever have chosen myself, but once I tried it on, it was perfect. Made from deep plum silk, it had a full, knee-length skirt and a loose, choker-style top that covered everything but wasn’t frumpy at all. He knew. He knew I’d feel uncomfortable wearing anything tight or revealing out in public and avoided a risqué outfit. Apart from the shoes. I’d probably regret wearing the five-inch black suede stilettos with metal spike heels, but they were so gorgeous I couldn’t resist.

I’d never been able to get my hair to hold a curl, but Bradley not only gave me a trim, he also piled half of my hair up on my head then did something magical to the rest with a straightening iron and created soft waves that flowed down my back.

“Are you looking forward to it?” he asked.

“Yes. I mean, I think so. What if no one talks to me? Or worse, what if everyone talks to me?”

“Just relax. You’re going with Gideon, and he’s a pro at these things.” He held up a lipstick brush. “Now, face me and stop talking.”

“Très beau, chérie,” Gideon said from the doorway. “Nice shoes. You’re taller than me tonight.”

Only by half an inch. With the heels, I stood at six feet one, more or less eye to eye with him. He’d worn a suit, a slim-fit tuxedo that looked made-to-measure. I realised my mouth had dropped open and snapped it shut. Dammit, could I be any more obvious about the way I felt?

Gideon walked towards me, but rather than stopping at his usual safe distance, he kept coming and kissed me on the cheek. I’d barely seen him all week—he’d been working while Bradley took me shopping three times and bought me more clothes than I’d ever owned in my life and Stefanie came over twice to watch movies in the basement theatre. Between that and going to the gym, five days had flown by, and even better, Gideon’s black eye had faded to almost nothing.

And now he took my hand, and the next thing I knew, my fingers were curled around a tiny velvet box.

“What’s this?”

“A gift.”

Bradley jumped up and down, clapping his hands. “Open it! Open it!”

I almost didn’t dare. It had to be jewellery, didn’t it?

Earrings. Gideon had bought me earrings. Drop earrings that sparkled and twinkled and made me feel sick.

“You can’t give me these,” I whispered.

“Why not? You give me gifts.”

“Because they’re diamonds.” Even I’d heard of Harry Winston. “I gave you a T-shirt and some macarons.”

How much did those earrings cost? Thousands. It had to be thousands.

“The T-shirt was very thoughtful, and the macarons were delicious.
