A Student’s Funeral

Michelle’s funeral was held the following day at the local church just a mile away from Granny’s house. Granny agreed to drive me there when I discovered the time and place at the last minute, and she even offered to be by my side, which I didn’t mind at all. Mama had to be out all day, visiting her real estate agent about our new house, and handling business with her lawyer. She made up her mind that she wanted to get a divorce from Daddy, who we haven’t seen in two months. I still feared something bad had happened to him. Mama kept assuring me that he was alive and was just hiding from us because he was a coward. I hoped she was right, and yet I hoped it wasn’t true.

The church was in an old building with a crush granite parking lot congested with cars. Granny squeezed the truck into one of the few empty spaces there. She wore a black dress, a pearl necklace, and a black hat decorated with flowers. Since all of my clothes were destroyed in the fire, the best outfit I could find was a purple, short-sleeved blouse, black pants, and a black denim jacket unbuttoned.

When we entered the building, the usher guided us to the next empty seats located on the left section of the rows. The middle section was reserved for family. The seats were filling up faster by the second, beginning from the front to the back. I didn’t stand out as much as I thought; other teenagers from school were dressed in their normal attire as well. At the front, I could see the opened coffin, but I couldn’t see Michelle’s face. Family members were standing in line to say goodbye to their loved one who left them so soon and unexpectedly. One man, who appeared to be middle-aged, took one look at the body and broke down in tears. Two other men had to lift him off the floor in order to contain him. I think the mourner was Michelle’s father.

There were several people in the stands whom I recognized from school; eight in particular I knew too well, yet at the same time, I wished I never knew. One of them had turned their head around and caught my eye. It was Clarissa Hartsock of the Untouchables. When she noticed me staring back at her, she turned to her other seven friends and at the same time, they were all staring at me suspiciously—all eight members of the Untouchables, which also included Jessica Hernandez and Ariel Lee. Instantly I focused my gaze at the pulpit.

What were they doing here? I wondered.

They had some nerve attending the funeral of one of their victims. But I knew they weren’t there to say goodbye to a peer. They were there for a different reason—one that could only benefit their own selfish goals. They were there to make sure no one would break rules one and two. Had to be the reason.
