CHAPTER 7

Brenn shut the door, and I realized that Kyrie wasn’t really there. It was a hologram of some sort. Jakob and I sat across from his shape.

“How are you doing this?” I asked.

“Astral projection,” he replied. “I’m in the Star Realm. Things have escalated here with regards to the war. I’m splitting my time between here and New Orleans. I’m trying to help Dominick Meyer to organize the shifter packs for attacks here in the human realm. I’ve come to warn you.”

“About?” I had more than one enemy.

“Xavier. He’s bringing reinforcements to attack the Fountain. Theoretically, this isn’t possible. If you’ve banished him as I have heard, then he can’t get in without your approval,” he said as he took a sip of the alcohol in his glass. His eyes glossed over, and he looked exhausted.

“Kyrie, you are doing too much. Stop trying to make up for your past with your present,” I said.

He lifted his gaze to me. “I would rebuke you if I had the energy. I’m doing what I’m doing now because it is what I should be doing. I’m not doing to as penance for being a brat as a kid. Our worlds are going to implode if something isn’t done.”

“You can’t do it alone,” I said.

“I’m not. I have Brenn in the Star Realm. I have Dominick, his family, and Killian in the human realm. We are all doing what we can. Controling the Fountain is important. Brenn’s Valkyries will remain on watch for you and aid you in a fight. They can call on reinforcements if needed. I hate to do this, but you need to get back to that Fountain and not leave,” he instructed.

“Are you taking me there?” I asked.

“Yes, and we will take Jakob back to Charleston.” Kyrie’s gaze shifted to Jakob. “You need to secure your treasures. During this war, all manner of beings will come for them. I will visit you when I can to help protect them. I suggest contacting your local wolfpack and hiring some security. If you can’t contact them, I’ll have Dominck Meyer send a representative to you.”

“Is that necessary?” Jakob asked.

“I’m worried it won’t be enough,” Kyrie replied.

“I see.”

“I’m sorry. I feel like I dragged you into this,” I said.

“You didn’t. I had this mark before I met you, and if I hadn’t met you, I wouldn’t know what it was,” Jakob replied.

“It is Wild power, and you wield it very well. You should test your limits with it,” Kyrie suggested.

Jakob nodded in understanding.

“We might need your help one day,” I said.

“You have it,” he said without hesitation.

“Well, Thistle, you’ve captured the attention of another powerful man,” Kyrie teased. He finally gave me one of his signature lopsided smiles.

“Kyrie,” I hissed. Jakob laughed.

“He’s not wrong. There is something very special about you,” Jakob added.

“Okay, that’s enough,” I said. I’d reached my limit for praise.

The limo drove along Whitaker Street and slowed next to the Fragrance Garden. I couldn’t see the entrance because of the tinted windows of the vehicle.
