THE SETTING WAS THE same: same unmarked entry, same dark foyer, same hostess stand just inside the door. Even Abigail’s smiling face behind the hostess stand was familiar. Yet, the atmosphere all around Claire was completely different.
Hall’s hand, which rested casually on the small of her back, could have been the difference.
Or it could have been the room itself.
The security guard looming just over her shoulder left her unsettled, but Claire reminded herself that every club she’d ever been to had a security team. True, not every club had a security office positioned just inside the door to protect its patrons from the public, but Ms. Fremanis had made it clear that The Club took security very seriously. As Claire glanced around the room, she understood why.
Unlike the day before, there was no mistaking the main floor for a restaurant. The black and gold décor that had seemed so striking and stately in the light of day was almost completely undetectable in the dark nightclub.
As the only real source of light in the room, her eyes were naturally drawn to the dance floor first. Strobe lights blinked to the rhythm of the thumping bass coming from the DJ booth. She’d kind of hoped that dancing might be an option. She’d seen a few of Hall’s moves the night before and had been wondering what it would be like to dance with him instead of for him. She’d also thought that the dance floor might be the only amenity at The Club she’d be interested in. As rainbow infused streams of light illuminated the undulating and writhing people on the dance floor, she crossed dancing off the list of possible activities for the night.
Not that I have a list. I do not have a list.
Eyes open. Eyes closed. The dancers, in all states of dress and undress, moved around and against each other. If there were couples on the dance floor, it wasn’t immediately apparent to Claire. Hands groped indiscriminately, brushing against whatever and whoever was closest.
Claire felt her heart begin to race.
A beautiful redhead pulled her mouth away from the man beside her only to spin into and continue the kiss with a brunette woman who’d been behind her. Undeterred, the man pressed up against the redhead’s backside. Claire watched her head tip backwards as his hands disappeared up her short skirt. The redhead pulled the brunette closer and her face lit up in pleasure when the man and the brunette began kissing each other over her shoulder.
Claire tried not to stare, but she couldn’t help herself. She was sure that she was no longer breathing.
She’d never seen ménage, not in real life or otherwise. Her cheeks flushed as the memory of her freshman year in the dorms crept up from the recesses of her subconscious for the second time in two days. She may have never seen ménage before but she’d certainly thought about it. More than once she’d wondered what would have happened if she’d crawled up onto the top bunk and joined in.
