Twenty-Six

Louth, Lincolnshire, 2021 AD

Sometimes not thinking can be more effective than pondering, as Jake discovered. After work, an on-line crossword presented him with an anagram that set him on the right track. He’d made no progress in the past few days because Threekingham had changed its name. The Victorian writer had called Threekingham “Threckingham” and only a hundred years had passed. Place names were anyway variable and it was gnawing away at the back of his mind. Laundon, the place where Werburgh died. They’d found it as Loundon, but in either case, Laundon or Loundon, and this was the thing that he’d missed, it must have derived from lang dun. There it was. Threekingham was the place of the long hill.

He clicked on a new tab;

surely that part of Lincolnshire is as flat as a pool table?

Clicking on his satellite map of Earth, he was delighted to find the slow rise of the land from Threekingham to the west. He hurried back to the search engine and typed in Threekingham Saxon Cross and read: The decorated base of a shaft of a Saxon wayside cross, damaged by the Puritans in the Civil War, believed to be from near Threekingham in Lincolnshire, is now to be found in the Usher Gallery, Lincoln. The base of the shaft is decorated on all sides, three sides with geometric patterns of vegetable vine motifs and interlacing zoomorphic motifs, while on the front there is an interesting head of a man, vegetation flowing from his mouth, thought to portray the Oak King…

“Yes!” Jake cried, causing Alice to rush over for an explanation. At last! He’d found the cross marking the place where the treasure was hidden. A reality check calmed him down since its being in a museum in Lincoln was not the same thing as finding out its original location. They decided they would have to go to the Usher Gallery and investigate.
