Outside, the alley was free of the spirits that had haunted it so thickly an hour ago. Even the giant frog-thing that looked too big to move was gone. Where the alley emptied out into the street, Willy T waited around the corner. “What happened?” the ghost asked. “That big nigga stepped into the room and it was like a tidal wave pushing me out. Next thing I know I’m on my ass, out on the street and can’t get back.”

“I think I met a god.”

“You talked to God?”

“Not the big G, God, just a little g, god. Anyway, I got what we came for. I think I know how to find my pops.” He gestured to his backpack with his thumb. “You ready?”

“Hey, man. I don’t need to be ready, you the one pickin’ up the ghost. Is you ready?”

Cinque looked back down the alley. Without the spirits in the way he saw what must have been one of Mr. Jaspers’ murals, eight stars and a bird in a tree. “If I am or if I ain’t, it don’t matter. Tonight, everything’s gonna work out fine.”
