The supes around the room regarded Mason warily. I opened my glands, taking in their scents. And yes, they regarded him with fear. For these badass supes to fear this creature spoke volumes. Mason was responsible for the gruesome deaths of those poor unicorns. For leaving that bomb for us. And I was sure for death and destruction we didn’t even know about. But most importantly, this supe had had something to do with my dad’s death. Anger flared through me, banishing fear and common sense. I started forward.

“What are you doing, Six?” Daevin caught my arm.

“Going straight to the source,” I replied. I shook off Daevin’s arm and stalked across the room.

Galu’s voice sounded in my head. “Zariya, what are you doing?”

Then Konstantin’s. “Someone, report.”

“Zariya’s going to talk to Mason,” Daevin said.

I navigated through the crowd, adrenaline singing in my veins. I needed to get the measure of this supe, to find out what he knew about Dad’s death.

“Zariya, stand down. That’s an order,” Konstantin barked.

I touched my comm gently, ducking my head so my hair covered the motion. “Get out of my head, Bauer.”

And then I was in front of him. With the broad stretch of his antlers, he was at least seven feet tall, his skin a chalky white. He was thin and long—all hard angles and sharp corners. And sharp talons—damn, those things looked lethal. His face was skeletal, but for two black eyes, shadowed by reddish bruised skin beneath. I swallowed. This supe was the stuff of nightmares.

“Konstantin, give her a minute,” Galu said.

“Mr. Mason,” I said.

In a languid sweep, he took me in.

My skin crawled. What the fuck was I doing here? Abort, abort! my mind cried. But it was too late. I’d let some fool urge carry me here. “I wanted to thank you for the invitation.”

“And you are?”

“Cat Richardson.”

“Cat…Catherine Richardson? I thought you were human.”

My heart stuttered. “Half.”

He cocked his head but didn’t question me further.

“Quite an impressive gathering you have here,” I said to fill the silence.

“Thank you.”

“When are we going to hear the details of the hunt?”

“Once everyone’s enjoyed their beverages, I’ll make the announcements.”

“I have to ask. Something like this—so public—how do you keep off MASC’s radar?”

He threw his head back and laughed, deep and booming. Others turned to look at us.

“Those bumbling idiots? They couldn’t find a fly in their own honey jar.”

I gave him a simpering smile, swallowing my outrage on Veil Force’s behalf. “Why do you say that?”

“Let’s just say that the only threat they ever posed to me has been neutralized.”

My smile faltered, my nostrils flaring. Was he talking about my dad?

He continued. “It’s all about who you know, Cat. The Collectors was founded on that principle, and we’ll continue to thrive because of it.” All about who you know… Did that mean he had a contact at MASC? Someone who was helping him? A mole in the organization?

I forced my smile to hold. “Wise words.”

Another supe was standing just beyond us, a nervous-looking vampire with Mediterranean coloring.
