CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

ours passed as Phire inhaled the details of the accident. Some notes made sense while others did not. Like why wasn’t there video footage of the accident scene or at the very least a recreation of how the accident may have happened. There was lots of hand written notes that she could barely understand. Another thing that bothered her was the fact that there were no skid marks. If something was happening to the fuel line that meant no gas was going to the motor. The car would have been pulling or jerking, something to indicate it was about to stall out. The driver would have automatically put on brakes. Or something. According to the old black and white photos there was no sign that the driver attempted to stop. It seemed like the car just exploded.

“A bomb.” Phire sat straight up.

There was a knock on her door.

“Go away.” She was too excited about the prospect of a break in the case of the mother of the Mayor-elect. She smiled, then typed the name of the case into her tablet.

“Um, Phire, I think you need to step out here.”

“I’m busy, Angela,” Phire said as she examined the pictures closer.

“Um, Phire, this is important.”

“Ugh…” Phire stood and snatched open the door. “What?”

“You have a visitor.” Angela hesitantly pointed towards the great room.

Angela grabbed her robe. “You might want to put this on.”

Frowning, Phire took the robe, stomped into the great room then came to an abrupt stop.

He was there, in her apartment. Mad as hell, apparently.

“It’s the middle of the day. Why aren’t you dressed?”

Phire raised an eyebrow, put a hand on her hip and gave the Mayor-elect a side eye. “You want to take a step back out that door and check that attitude?”

“Put some clothes on. You are going out.” LT did not flinch or blink an eye.

Phire looked past him. “Hello, Grant.”

Grant held up his hands. “I tried to stop him.”

“Can I offer anyone some tea?” Angela asked.

All eyes turned to her.

“Maybe another time,” LT replied then walked over to Phire. “What made you think it was okay to tangle with a grown man? Do you realize Mint could have killed you? I told you to let me take you home. I told you that.” LT took a deep breath. “Get dressed. You are going to DMV right now.”

“Last time I checked, my father’s name was Joe Lassiter. Not Lawrence Trent Palmer,” Phire yelled.

“Don’t you ever call me that! Get dressed now. You have ten minutes or I will come in there and dress you myself.”

Phire huffed as she turned. “I know how to take care of myself. Who ended up on his ass? He did, not me,” she yelled as she slammed her bedroom door behind her.

LT walked over to the door to bang on it, but stopped.

“Ten minutes, Sapphire.”

He stomped back into the great room and glared at Grant. “Not one word.”

Grant looked at Angela. “I think I will have a cup of tea,” he said as he sat at the table.
