Chapter Five

Philip held Adrian in his arms as his breathing slowed, evened into sleep. Firelight played over the gargoyle’s dark face, and he leaned close and gently kissed the deep scar running from his eye to his chin. He traced the scar over Adrian’s heart with his fingers.

So beautiful. As a child he’d climbed onto those muscular thighs and snuggled against the sculpted chest, safe in his powerful arms. Philip had shied away from the intimacy as he grew older, though there were times in his loneliness when he kissed the full, cold lips, touched the strong chest.

Heat flushed through Philip as he recalled the desperate nights his fingers had strayed lower, outlined the hint of a thick cock, cupped the hard scrotum. He hid his eyes against Adrian’s shoulder, though the gargoyle slept and didn’t witness his embarrassment. He wondered if Adrian had been aware of his touch, and his heart raced.

Would Adrian welcome his caress? His body surged to life at the thought of Adrian’s hands on him, Adrian’s mouth on his body, the gargoyle’s thick member sliding up inside him.

He groaned, aching with desire, but rolled away from Adrian. Rising to his knees, he tucked the blanket around his Watcher. The beautiful, damaged wings no longer bled, but the severed ends of the long feathers looked raw, painful. He kissed Adrian’s furrowed brow and delighted in his murmur of pleasure.

He wasn’t sure if he was ready, but circumstances gave him no choice.

The staircase wound through the heart of the castle, soundless and cold, and Philip shivered as he climbed. When he reached the top landing he sat cross-legged, placing the candle beside him. He breathed deeply of the chilled air to clear his head, and when he was calm and focused, he sent his thoughts out to search for an unfamiliar presence along the empty corridors and silent rooms.

He found Jaimin almost at once, a flame of energy in the darkness. A dimmer light flickered beside him: the old woman. Philip’s lips curled into a smile, pleased. They’d found their way into the basement and the door to the labyrinth of tunnels under the castle. But they were not Agenor. They would spend their strength against the wards binding it closed.

Satisfied his enemies were thus occupied, Philip took up the candle and entered the castle on the topmost level where his parents had their rooms. There had been no fire lit in those chambers for a week, and Philip wished he’d brought a cloak with him.

He found his father’s room to be as stark as the man himself. Philip hurried across the tiles to his mother’s chamber. Once safe within the
