Scout stayed far away from Lane’s shoot, fussing over the extra goodie bags they’d made in case there were more people at the event than anticipated.

“Looks like Lane is finishing up,” Isla said, stifling a yawn. It had been a long day. “I might hand the extra bags out to the grooming and makeup staff.”

“That’s a nice gesture.”

“Sure, if we overlook the fact that I don’t want to trek all this stuff back to the office.” Isla laughed. “We’re going to a fundraiser for Dani’s ballet school tonight and I really wanted to have time to refresh myself properly in between.”

“I’ll bring our stuff back to the office,” Scout offered.

“Oh my gosh, no. That was not me trying to guilt you into doing it.” Isla shook her head. “It’s totally out of your way.”

“Please.” Scout waved a hand. “I don’t have anywhere to be tonight. I’ll bag it up and take a cab. It’s a good excuse to get something from Vincent’s for dinner.”

“Are you sure?” Isla frowned.

“One hundred percent. Why don’t you go now? I’ll off-load whatever I can and pack up the rest. Then I’ll bring it back to the office. That should give you an extra forty minutes at least to chill before you have to head out.”

“You’re the best.” Isla gave her a hug. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

Scout made a scoffing sound. “You’d be fine.”

Isla pulled back and nailed her with a hard stare. “Do you seriously have no idea what a blessing our friendship has been to me? Especially these last few years. I would have drowned with the stress of worrying about Dani and my career. If it wasn’t for you, I’d probably still be working reception at the dog grooming place, dithering about whether or not to strike out on my own.”

“You only needed someone to believe in you.”

“Yeah, I did. And that person is you.” Isla squeezed her shoulder. “I will always be grateful that you gave me the push to bet on myself by opening Paws in the City. It changed my life. Our friendship means the world to me.”

Scout found herself a little choked up with emotion. “It means the world to me, too.”

The women hugged and Isla said her goodbyes before heading home. Scout offered the extras around, and most people were excited to take some of the goodies. She was taking a quick inventory of what was left when Lane approached.

“Hey, you got your shirt back,” she teased. “Good for you.”

“That is about as much public nudity as I need for the rest of my life,” he joked back. Star was still on her leash, sniffing around.

“Let me get you a goodie bag. I’ll throw in a few extras for Little Miss Well Behaved.” She reached for some of the bagged doggy treats. “These are all organic and made by a small woman-run business. She’ll love them.”

“Thanks.”

When Scout handed the bag over to Lane, her fingers brushed his, and she sucked in a breath at the electricity that shot up her arm.
