CZERNIAK AND SWANSON were two very angry detectives. They separated Saiera from me, and Czerniak escorted me to an interrogation room. Before he could draw breath to start hammering me with questions, I spoke up.

“I want to call my lawyer.”

“You?” His face twisted in disbelief. “You have a lawyer?”

“Yes.” At least, I hoped I did. Maurice Chesterfield might decide his new employee was more trouble than he was worth and wash his hands of me without thinking twice. Then it would be a Pottsville public defender between me and the noose. “And I want to call him. I, uh, invoke my right to counsel.”

Czerniak waved at me like I was a bad stink and left the room. I pulled up Chesterfield’s contact info on my phone and selected his cell number. It was after nine p.m. Please don’t be asleep already.
