The Pentabyte offices have calmed considerably since the successful BHC sting operation.

There was a joint press conference during which the FBI gave brief details about the sting operation, and the SEC and IRS suits also took a turn at the podium, explaining that during the course of their investigations they had to use many diversion tactics and smoke screens to throw BHC off the trail and prevent them from destroying crucial evidence before the sting operation could be carried out. They concluded by saying that Pentabyte was never formally under investigation by either department of the government.

Pentabyte’s stock has been on the rebound ever since the warrants failed to surface, but since the press conference, it’s climbing much more rapidly. Today, there are no more government suits lingering about in the lobby, and the atmosphere is almost jubilant. There are smiles on the faces of the staff who step into the elevator to join me for the morning trip upstairs.

But things aren’t quite back to normal — or maybe this is the new normal — because when I exit the elevator and step into the main reception area of Pentabyte HQ, it’s far from quiet and empty.

The waiting lounge is nearly full of eager visitors. Some of them are young and bright-eyed, fidgeting nervously with their phones, folders, and portfolios on their laps. Others are older and dressed to impress in nice suits, briefcases at their feet. They all have the look of hopeful job applicants, unsure of their future prospects and yet excited for the opportunity to be here.

I understand. I feel the same way at the moment. I’ve accepted the guys — heart, mind, and soul — and I’m ecstatic to also be working with them here at Pentabyte, but this is the first time I’m arriving as a newly employed member of the company. It’s a lot different than going to clock-in for a shift at the hospital.

Maria looks up from her desk, her smile becoming wider as she sees me. “Miss Collins! So nice to have you with us.”

I spare a side glance to the job seekers, not missing the wide eyes and jaws falling open. My name has been in the media a lot lately, first as the rising star BHC was bringing on board, then being lauded as the person responsible for taking those fuckers down — the guys refused to let me share the limelight with them, preferring to stay on the fringes — and now, as the newest talent to join Pentabyte. “Thank you, Maria. I’m excited to get started.”

“Good, because the guys are waiting on you. They’re in the room across from Jude’s office, the one with the blinds drawn. You all must be cooking up something good,” she says with a grin.

The guys got up at the crack of dawn this morning, saying they needed to head to the office early. They insisted that I come in on my own, at my regularly scheduled time, instead of arriving with them.
