The feeling that Janet Jenkins had either lied or held something back when they’d talked by phone had continued to niggle away at Victoria Nguyen’s brain. If she knows how to get in touch with Pedace, then she might contact him, she thought. She called a computer hacker and had him track down Jenkins’s office and home addresses. Then she called an informant at the telephone company and gave her the addresses.

“You have a cell number for her?”

“No,” Nguyen said. “But can’t you track it down from her home address? Her cell phone bill probably goes there.”

“I can do that. What am I looking for?”

“I want the number of every telephone call, text, or email she makes from or receives on her cell and office phones.”

“My God, there could be hundreds.”

“There could be. I don’t care. Just send them to me.”

“Over what time period?”

“Start with calls from yesterday and go forward until I tell you to stop.”

Nguyen then called another informant, this one at a credit bureau. She gave the man Jenkins’s name and home address. “What I want is any activity on her credit cards related to travel. Flights, rental cars, hotel rooms. Like that.”

Nguyen made a third call. This time to a friend she’d grown up with in New York City. He’d been a member of a Vietnamese gang in the City and had gone to Los Angeles when his parents decided to separate him from bad influences in New York. But Pham Van Duc quickly affiliated with a gang on the west coast and later became the top guy. Nguyen and Pham had stayed in touch and, periodically, helped one another. Nguyen gave Janet Jenkins’s address to Pham and told him what she needed.
