Chapter 12

After she rose to consciousness, it took Zoey a few minutes to figure out where she was.

It wasn’t normal for her to be sleeping on the couch in her room, her arms tangled up in Steve’s legs. With a start, she realized her feet were basically in his face and jerked them back.

She couldn’t manage to get upright without waking him, and he looked just as befuddled when he sat up as she had felt. Zoey handed him his glasses, which were on the floor next to the couch. “I guess we fell asleep during the movie.” She brushed bits of popcorn off her chest onto the floor, making a mental note to vacuum later.

“Oops. I guess we’ll never know how it ends now,” he said, his tone sad. “I mean, I don’t know if I can live with the stress of wondering whether that guy ever got his singing career off the ground. That orangutan sure was making it as difficult as possible for him.”

Zoey laughed. “We can finish watching it some other time. That’s the beauty of streaming.” She walked him to the door, intending to let him out and then take a shower. But, once her door was open, noise from the common room drifted up the stairway to them.

“What do you suppose is going on down there?” Steve adjusted his glasses and then stifled a yawn with his hand.

“If I were a betting woman, I’d say our residents have found out that I sent Kelli a message last night asking her to orchestrate the taking down of their PI business.” Zoey winced. “They’re probably upset. But I really have to change and freshen up before I can go deal with it.”

“Me too. Kelli’s going to have to hold off the angry wildcats on her own for a few minutes.” He started down the hallway to his suite, then stopped and turned back toward her. “Hey. Thanks for last night. I feel a lot better.”

“Good.” She closed the door and leaned her head back against it for a minute. Well, that makes one of us. She was glad she’d been able to alleviate some of Steve’s fears, but it was as though she’d simply added them to her own. She’d felt confident promising him last night that they’d have their happy every after, but would they?

She pushed off the door and crossed to the bathroom, rubbing her temple as she went, as though she could rub out the pessimistic thoughts. “Okay, Zoey, get it together. You can do this. All you have to figure out is who actually killed Rhea. Or at least find out enough to get Luke going on the right track. You can do that.”

The self-pep-talk helped, and so did a quick shower. By the time she went downstairs, Zoey was feeling like her regular self again. Ready to take on the problem and get it handled.

The common room was a mess, making Zoey stop in her tracks at the bottom of the stairway.
