Someone Familiar

I wake up to Ellie still in my arms as we cuddle underneath the Mylar blanket. I rub my eyes and notice some light originating from the elevator shaft.

In a state of panic, I look around to see if any of the others have made it yet, no signs of them… the light coming from the elevator shaft would indicate that it’s morning. Ellie awakens with her body tense and a look of surprise that transforms into a smile.

She holds me tighter and kisses me on the cheek. We only went as far as kissing last night, but I get the feeling this could be the start of something great once I get over some feelings of undeserved guilt.

“Hey, they aren’t here and it’s morning...”

She sits up and looks around. “What do we do?”

“I don’t know, I’ll go check out what’s going on up above.”

I sit myself up on the bed and wiggle my ankle around, no pain… so far so good. I grab my rifle and sling it around my back. I set my feet to the ground and gradually put some more weight on it… feels fine now, must have been a weird landing.

“Ellie, stay here, I’ll be right back.”

I make my way to the elevator, but before I could make it to the door, Ellie runs up behind me, grabs me by the bicep to spin me around to kiss me. I grab her by the small of her back, we continue kissing until I let go.

She holds up two MRE pouches and says, “Hurry up! I’ll have some French toast, bacon, sausage, syrup, coffee, and some fruit ready when you get back.”

I give her a short but audible laugh as I climb into the elevator car. Once I get inside, I line myself up with the open flap at the ceiling of the car, squat down and jump. My hands get a firm grip on the roof of the elevator and I do a pull-up to get my head out… I’m not as strong as I used to be, there is definitely a little bit of atrophy that the shock therapy didn’t quite get to.

For the next part, I’ll have to get a little creative. As my legs are dangling from the elevator ceiling, I swing my feet to find the inner walls of the elevator to use it as leverage to push the rest of my body up and out of the car… success!

I didn’t have to look at my watch to notice that it wasn’t the morning and more than likely the early afternoon. It was incredibly bright, even for being in the center of downtown.

No sign of the guys. I do a sweep of the entire floor, no gear, no chatter, nothing. I get to a pillar about ten feet from the entrance and kneel beside it to see if I can make visual contact with anything outside… nada. I stay as still as possible for any sounds that may carry through the wind… still nothing.
