Chapter Sixteen

Rachel

I had mentioned that I was taking a class, but the information didn’t seem to quite sink in with Dahlia, who had been talking about the latest drama at school. There were drugs involved. Dahlia was laughing because the way the girl incriminated herself was supposedly funny, but Joanna and I just kept looking at each other. Neither one of us slept well that night. I think we were both preoccupied by the fact that Dahlia was in a place to think drugs were funny. We were sure she wasn’t using any, and we didn’t think she had any interest, but we didn’t know how to address the situation. The next morning, coffee was a must. I ground the beans and started up the machine. I leaned into a fold, feeling my back and legs stretch, and my shoulders release, inhaling and waiting for the rich scent of strong dark beans to hit me. I didn’t hear Joanna come in behind me. “You okay?”

I stood slowly, trying to feel each vertebrae as it came into place. I didn’t speak until my eyes were looking into hers. “Most definitely.”

“Okay.” She pulled two mugs down from the shelf and started putting sugar and creamer in mine.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I’m really enjoying that yoga class. I feel better, more energized.” The coffee started dripping into the pot. “Except for this morning, but overall it’s really helping me. The instructor runs a studio, and I think I might start checking it out as well.”

“On top of the class?”

“Yeah.” I didn’t want to seem over-zealous. “I figure it can’t hurt to check it out. I can pay one class at a time, so if I don’t like it we haven’t lost anything.”

“I think that’s fine. I’m glad you’re liking it, and it wouldn’t hurt you to take a little break from painting since you’re doing a big show.”

“I’m not planning on breaking fully. I’m playing around with some new ideas for new projects, but I’m also not focused on completing anything in particular, so it’s not a big time constraint.”

She poured the coffees and passed me my cup. She turned around to get her own coffee and left the room, I assume to shoo Dahlia down stairs.

Nina and I met for a late lunch Friday. We were planning to hang out a little before picking up the girls. We stopped in a sandwich shop and ate our meals slowly, over the course of an hour, as we talked about things in our lives. I told her that Candace was genuinely nice, and that I didn’t think it would be awkward at all to work with her. When Joanna came with me though might be another story. She told me that they had had to cut people at work. She was glad her boss had sacked her assistant since the girl was usually high and always unproductive, but she was scared to find out that the position wouldn’t be filled. She was certain she could handle
