“No one will touch you. All you have to do is show yourself, let them ogle you for a small fee.”

“Show myself? You mean, let a strange man look at my unclothed body?”

Pa nodded so quickly, it was apparent none of this concerned him in the slightest. I should be relieved that I had managed to erase his fears of our child becoming a pervert from being exposed to “dirty thoughts and activities.”

“There’s a huge demand for it—men with trunks full of cash, who aren’t getting what they need at home but don’t necessarily want to be unfaithful to their wives.”

I pressed my fingers to my temples, trying to get a solid grip on why men would want to pay money just to see a naked pregnant woman. Then again, Pa had gotten to the point that he couldn’t go more than twenty-four hours without taking off my clothes and running his hands all over my flesh.

If only he would fuck me too.

That was the one thing he was still timid about, convinced he would somehow hurt the baby.

But was I comfortable showing my body to one stranger after another?

“We really need the money, Ruth.” Pa sat next to me on the bed and put a reassuring hand on my leg. “Times are tough right now. Mr. Scott down at Collin’s Grocery has already told me they’re going with a cheaper supplier if I can’t give him a better price on our eggs. I’m already taking a loss as it is.”

My heart sank listening to Pa go on about our finances. He was right. Things had changed rapidly over the last few months. And the outlook was dismal. All this stock market baloney was hurting everyone. We needed to do something fast or things would only get worse.

“I want to be able to provide for our child, without having to break my back in the process,” he added.

I looked into his eyes and saw the concern there. Up until a few months ago, Pa had been my stepfather. He had always taken care of me. Now, he was my husband and the father of my child. My nineteenth birthday was one month away. And just the thought of not being able to feed our baby and give him the best life made me sick with worry.

Right in front of us was a simple solution, and all I had to do was take off my clothes.

“You’ll be with me the whole time, right?”

His face beamed brightly. “Course I will, Ruthie. I wouldn’t leave you alone with a strange man.”

I cupped his face and kissed him on the lips. “Well, it’s settled then. No more back-breaking work for my pa.”

For various reasons, Pa didn’t want men coming and going from our small cabin, so he had arranged for me to go to their home or office.

My first client was a physician who lived an hour away, and his wife was spending several weeks with a sister in Detroit. According to Pa, he was incredibly lonely and “in need of a woman’s company without actually being unfaithful.
