Settled Dust

Howard Wilson stepped through a swirling portal into the immense, pillared Central Guild Hall, the meeting place for all the Guilds and the Association. Designed in a sweeping Greek style, it had been designed to emulate the great senate hall of old and sat in the middle of the elegant and thoughtfully designed Willow District at the center of the city.

They had all been called forward by the Hunter’s Association to pass judgement on Josiah Mather. He was currently had under lock and key after the association’s hound had rounded him up—once the rift was cleared, of course.

At that moment, Howard Wilson was in no particular mood to marvel at the beauty of the structure, and instead stalked toward the box designated for the Stormforge guild. The pendant on his chest lit up with a momentary glow, but he calmed himself and forced the magic to calm down.

The Stormforge Guild’s senate box was located near the top. A central platform stood tall in the middle of the room, surrounded by slowly rising tiers of seating and Guild boxes. Generally speaking, the higher you were placed, the higher-ranked your guild was considered to be. There were very few who had higher seating than the Stormforge Guild, and Howard wasn’t planning on resting until there was none.

As he settled into his chair and looked down at the central platform, his lips twisted into a snarl. Climbing the ranks was the last thing on his mind.

No, what held his attention was the unknown. The no name who had single-handedly cleared the dungeon, along with the Hunter’s Association rep who had gone into the rift beside him.

“I want to know everything about him.” He muttered to an aide who slipped into the box next to him. “Who is he? What’s his rank? Where does he sleep? Who are his allies and what can he do. I want to crush this man with everything we have.”

The aide sat down in a small chair just next to his master. “His name is Josiah Mather; I was able to pull that much from the association. Officially, he doesn’t hold any rank, and he’s not affiliated with any guild. But… He is a standing member of the Knightly Order of St. George. A lot of their information is sealed.”

“The order, eh?” Howard’s lip curled in disdain. “Those old men are still around are they?”

“How unfortunate.” He’d run into members time and again through his years, and they were all problematic. They operated outside of the normal rules that had governed society ever since the first of the rifts had completely reimaged the world.

“I’m sorry I don’t have any better news,” The aide nodded. “This is the first time aside from his awakening to be noted by the association, but he’s been logged as—”

“I don’t want to hear what’s worthy of the association.” Howard nearly flew into a fury, then forced himself to calm down. “I want to hear what he took from that dungeon, and I want to know what he can do.
