The Screw Up

“We’ll take that now,” Vernon said in front of the abandoned one-level house surrounded by miles of thick woods, smirking.

Pritchard whipped out the automatic from behind his back and shot Gil’s shoulder. Gil gasped in surprised pain, dropped the heavy black duffle bag, and stumbled from the bullet’s force.

Brady, Gil’s younger brother and unarmed, plowed into Pritchard. Both men fell to the dirt and fought for the gun.

Vernon darted for the bag. Gil rammed into him and sent Vernon to the ground where he stomped on his torso and head until he lay still.

Brady jumped off Pritchard and aimed the gun at him. Pritchard, kneeling, raised his palms, a mix of fear and rage in his edged face.

Gil gasped in pain, struggling on his feet, and held his wound.

“You have ten seconds to live,” Gil, with confidence, said.

Pritchard glanced at Vernon, bloody and moaning, on the ground.

“Carry him,” Gil said.

Pritchard helped Vernon down the long dirt driveway that led to the country road. Brady trained the gun on their backs and walked Gil to the house.

No more shots were fired.

Gil, still gripping the bag, fell onto the couch. Dust exploded out from under him. Brady left him the gun and found old towels in a bedroom closet. He pressured one to the wound.

“Gahh, the hell,” Gil said, pushing him away. “Killing me. As stupid as them.”

Brady, dejected, swallowed and turned away. Gil pressed the towel to his leaking wound.

“You said we could trust them.”

“Worked two banks and a diamond warehouse with them before this,” Gil said.

“What’s different now?”

“You?”

Brady’s fist tightened and his stubbly face reddened.

“You came to me for help,” Brady said. “I didn’t want to do this.”

Gil smirked.

“Please. Living in that trailer park, eating Ramen noodles, barely working 20 hours at the Piggly Wiggly,” he said. “I’m surprised you didn’t kiss me after I made the offer. But you were always a loser.”

Panting, each breath bringing up a past trauma with Gil’s name on it, Brady stepped to the back of the house.

“I’ll make sure all the doors and windows are locked.”

Darkness consumed the house despite the bare windows allowing a smidgen of moonlight breaking through the trees. A few miles away, the car used for the job was covered with a camouflage net and stray branches. The one Pritchard and Vernon used was the same in the opposite direction. The plan was to hold up in the house until the Feds and cops stopped searching for them. Not anymore.

Brady thought they could make it to their car, avoid the cops to the next state. But not with Gil’s condition. The bullet was lodged in the shoulder bone. The hole continued to bleed. Gil fell in and out of consciousness. No way Brady could take him on a 2-mile trek through the woods. Not with Vernon and Pritchard out there and three shots left in the gun.

A shadow moved from one tree to the other. Brady, his heart hyper, glanced at his sleeping, useless brother. He
