Chapter Thirteen

Gage hadn’t gone home. Instead, he ran and kept running. Not until after the sun rose could he begin to grasp the reality of a future without Rae. He’d accepted he could never be with her as a man who loves a woman but up until last night, he’d thought as long as he appeared to her as a wolf, he would always be able to look into her eyes and not see fear.

When he’d left her, she’d looked at him as if he’d deceived her. As if he’d promised to protect her without shedding any blood, but his size and growl wouldn’t avert danger every time. Sometimes one had to fight. She’d never trusted Gage the man, but she’d accepted his wolf form as a protector and as a friend. If he’d known the future when he’d kissed her for the first time, he would’ve never left.

He’d come home to a quiet house, and he’d preferred it that way. He didn’t want to explain why he hadn’t come home last night. Although, when Noah got up, he would want to know.

He went to the bathroom and took off his clothes. His muscles ached and he needed a shower. Hours of running had left him covered in dirt and sweat. As he let the water run over his back side, he placed his hands flat against the back of the shower and hung his head. Whether she understood or not, he’d done what he’d had to do. He’d protected her and as a result, lost her.

After he dried off and put on a clean change of clothes, he found Noah sitting in the kitchen drinking a cup of coffee and Maggie in front of the stove.

“You want some breakfast this morning?” she asked.

“Sounds good. I’m starving,” he said. He avoided Noah’s stare as he poured himself a cup of coffee.

Maggie began layering bacon in the skillet. “I hope that young Taylor woman is all right this morning.”

Gage shot a look at the older man.

“Maybe you should give her a call,” she said as she turned to Noah.

“What happened?” Gage demanded more than asked.

His leader leaned up in his chair. His eyes never left Gage’s but Gage didn’t back down.

“I thought you could tell me,” Noah said. “I told you to look out for her.”

“I did.” He walked to the table and put down his cup of coffee.

“Were you there when Luke forced a read?”

“I was there until her stalkers from the other day decided to pay her another visit.” He placed both hands on the back of a chair. “I was there until she saw me attack them.” He raised his voice. “And I was there until I scared her so much she didn’t want me anywhere near her.”

Maggie pointed her spatula at the men. “Do I need to leave?” The volume of her voice matched Gage’s. “Because if you two are going to go at it, I don’t want to listen.”

Noah shook his head, but his stare never wavered.
