Chapter Twelve

I half-woke to the sound of Jace’s soft voice, but there was no need to go back to the world. I wanted to slip back into my vague dreams.

“-help us,” he was saying. “So bad. Can’t go again. Ever. And the pimp…I don’t know. I don’t know… Letting Ozzy sleep.”

I pried my eyes open. He was on the phone. It dawned on me that he was begging for help. He was bothering Dr. Sardana with my problems.

No. No, he’d ruin his chance.

I flew up and lunged at him, snatching the phone away. Before I could think of what to say, I’d pressed it up against my ear. My eyes squeezed shut in concentration, trying to force the last of the sleepiness out.

“-not a problem for me at all. Please calm down. Can you do that for me?”

Think.

“Dr. Sardana, You don’t have to do anything. I can handle it.”

There was a pause before he responded. “No, you can’t, Ozzy. I know we just met, but I’ve seen the whole thing on the news, and I’ve made some calls. Emporium isn’t safe right now, especially not for anyone who wears gang colors. I’m going to help. You work for the man who owns Red House?”

“...Yes.”

“I wish I’d asked while I was there. It was stupid to get into such a rush.”

“No, it’s a rush situation.” I was pacing, ignoring Jace, who was standing there watching me walk back and forth past him in the small room. The concrete floor was cold against my feet.

“In any case, I want you both back at my safe house,” he said. “I’ll have my assistant come over and let you in.”

“I…wait.” All I could do was make sounds of disbelief and indecision.

“Ozzy, please. I can’t worry about you and work sixteen hours a day on the U. Let me help. I know you’ll do it for Jace. You can’t worry him. This kind of stress could be very bad for him.”

“Are you serious?” God, I’d stressed him out. I was so stupid. My eyes watered.

“Just take care of him, Ozzy. Can you still do that? Will you go to my safe house and stay until I get back? It might be a while. A few weeks at most, but you’ll have everything you need. I keep the place stocked.”

“Yeah, okay.” I looked at Jace. His face was relaxing into a gentle smile.

“Some packing,” he said, and grabbed clean clothes from the floor, throwing them on the bed.

“Okay, we’re going right now,” I told the doctor. “This is very generous. I can’t thank you enough.”

“You can thank me by keeping safe and taking care of each other. Tell Jace I said that.”

“I will.”

“Alright, go,” he said. “Use the bikes and call me when you get there.”

“I will.”

He said goodbye, and we hung up. Jace came up with some grocery bags, and we stuffed them with our things.

“It’s not actually an emergency,” I told Jace. “Barkley has a lot to deal with right now, and the party house is crawling with cops.
