Chapter 10

Angelica smiled at his possessiveness.

"They weren't men making love to her."

His taut features relaxed and a smile curled his lips.

"You would be open to another woman playing the part?"

Her insides quivered at the thought of the double pleasure. She nodded.

His smile broadened. "I see." He pushed himself to a sitting position. "Since we're speaking of playing a part …" He stroked her hair from her face and tucked it behind her ear. "I made an error that first night, thinking you were playing a role, wanting to be dominated by your captor."

"Yes, I remember."

"Those books you had … you find the idea of being captured and dominated exciting, don't you?"

She hesitated.

"It was scary when I thought it was for real."

"Yes, I understand. I never meant it to be like that."

She rested her hand on his arm. "I know that now."

He squeezed her hand.

"I am wondering, though …" he continued. "That is something that would excite you, isn't it? As long as you knew it was play-acting?"

She stared at him, considering his words. Her insides quivered at the thought.

"If it was play-acting, yes. We'd need a safety word, though. Something I could say that would indicate that I want to stop."

"I see. That way you can protest and make it seem like you are really struggling against your captor, keeping the realism, while allowing you an escape."

"That's right."

He took her hand and led her into the bedroom.

"The safety word will be airplane. I will have someone bring you a gown."

He strode past his discarded pants and exited the room. Being master of his domain seemed to mean he didn't mind walking the halls of the palace naked.

A few moments later, a female servant arrived and handed her a long, white, gauze gown and a hairbrush, then she lit some candles and two oil lamps, turned off the lights and left.

Angelica found a towel in the ensuite bathroom and rubbed her hair vigorously, leaving it fairly dry after her unexpected swim, then she tugged on the gown and brushed her hair. After a few moments, she returned to the bedroom, wondering when Kadin would return … and with whom.

The room seemed strangely quiet in the soft light of the lamps. She closed the bathroom door and stepped toward the bed.

A hand clamped around her mouth and she was pulled back against a solid chest. A bearded man wearing a flowing tunic and billowy pants stepped in front of her.

"You are our prisoner," he said in a gruff, young man's voice. "You will do exactly as you are told."

Angelica's heart drummed loudly. This must be one of Kadin's women disguised with a fake beard, but she was doing a wonderful job of acting like a man. Unless Kadin had decided to bring another man after all. She wasn't sure she was quite ready for that.

Unable to protest verbally with Kadin's hand tight over her mouth, she shook her head. An errant thought ricocheted through her brain. What if this wasn't Kadin and
