CHAPTER FOUR
Vince completed the work as fast as he could knowing that Owen was waiting on his ride and would probably leave if Morgan arrived. Finally he completed the signatures and hurried back to the front door. He hadn’t let Jordan inside for fear he would say something crass to Owen. Owen was a better man, a finer man and didn’t deserve the baseness of someone the caliber of Jordan Kimble. His heart sank when he saw the foyer empty. He looked around briefly and then saw the note on the table. I’m sorry, I had to go. Owen.
Vince put the note in his pocket and opened the door thrust the paperwork into Jordan’s hands and closed the door without another word, even as Jordan started pleading like some baseless animal. He walked over to the sofa and sat down and dropped his head into his hands. “How had everything gone so wrong so fast?” He was at a loss to understand. He raked his fingers through his hair over again as he went back through everything that happened this morning and tried to pin point the problem. He was pretty certain there was no job and Owen had made up the excuse in order to leave.
Vince made his living reading people, but he just couldn’t get a handle on Owen Falk. He also was having a problem understanding why he cared so damn much. He actually ached for the man. When he announced he was leaving Vince thought his world had dropped out from under him. No man had ever affected him, he never allowed it, yet here he was on the verge of getting into his car and following Owen home and making him explain. He decided he needed to talk to someone who knew Owen, so he grabbed his phone and dialed his son.
...
“You want to talk about it?” Morgan gave his brother a sideways glance as they traveled back home. “He’s your mate and worth your forgiveness. I don’t know what he did, but you should try to work it out before walking away.”
“It’s not what you think.” Owen turned to look at Morgan who was now staring at the road ahead. “I overheard him this morning talking to someone on the phone. He voiced a lot of my own fears and I realized I wouldn’t fit into his life and I don’t feel right about asking him to make changes for me.” Owen gave a deep sigh. “He is someone important, he is established, he’s thirty nine and has an adult son. How can I fit? I won’t ask him to change his life for me or make accommodations for me, it isn’t fair. Besides he isn’t looking for anything long term.” Owen turned to gaze out the side window.
“What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know. He’s my mate and my wolf is frantic and tearing me apart inside. How do I live without him? I overheard him tell someone on the phone this morning that the gulf between us was too wide.
