Iris returned to New York soon enough not to be missed. Sheâd used personal days for her off-the-books investigation, and sheâd been careful about not leaving a trace for anyone to follow. They still could have had eyes on her.
Iris had always been a by-the-book kind of agent, aside from her recent stint in Indiana. It was the first and only time sheâd ever gone rogue, and her punishment had been worse than the crime. Peake and all his superiors probably thought sheâd had enough of desk duty and needed to hit the beach for a few days to recover. Heâd even mentioned trying to get her back out in the field when she returned. Once they found out what sheâd really been up to, theyâd either fire her or promote her. After all the secrets and lies of the last few months from both herself and her colleagues, Iris wasnât sure which she preferred.
Shaking off the thoughts of despair, Iris looked up at the house down the street from where sheâd parked. The last time sheâd been here, Mrs. Moore had made sure Iris knew she wasnât welcome. That woman would give her no answers about Bear and Mandy, even if she had themâand Iris wasnât convinced she did.
But her son, Marcus? No doubt he had them. Rosie had made it clear that he and Mandy were still close when she and Bear were living in North Carolina. At one point, Mandy had been friendly with Jenny, but they were no longer friends. Rosie hadnât told her what the incident had been to end their friendship, and Iris hadnât asked. As interested as she was in everything Bear had done prior to their meeting, she had to pick and choose. Jenny was out. Marcus was in.
It was a risk coming back here. Showing up again would set off more alarms than the first time. Maybe sheâd call Sheriff McKinnon to deal with Iris. That wouldnât be so terrible. McKinnon had been distant but helpful. But if Mrs. Moore called the Feds, Iris would have a storm to deal with.
Perhaps luck would be on her side today. The driveway was empty. Summer Break hadnât ended yet. But he might be involved in extracurricular activities. Maybe he was out with friends or at a summer camp.
Before Iris could think of more worst-case scenarios, she popped open her door and hurried down the sidewalk toward the house. Sheâd traded in her suit for a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. She couldnât carry her gun out in the open, but she wasnât expecting trouble from a fifteen-year-old, one Mandy trusted no less. Then again, maybe that would be Irisâ first mistake.
Iris didnât need to walk up to the door to know someone was home. The television blared in the living room. Guns and shouting and explosions could be heard from the sidewalk. When she approached the door, she had to bang on it in the hopes that whoever was inside would be able to hear her.
