“You put me in a rotten position,” Claudia admonished as they retraced their steps to the pub. “I’d love to be of help, but—”

Before she could finish, Dax interrupted, “It wasn’t just to meet those families that I asked you to come.”

“Oh? You have yet another ulterior motive for getting me to Cambridge?”

“I asked those particular people to come and meet you because—”

When he hesitated, she prompted, “Because?”

“I believe one of them is a spy for Agrichem. That’s what I really want your help with.”

Claudia stopped in her tracks and stared at him in surprise. “Which of them do you suspect?”

“Keep walking. Let’s not draw any attention.”

“Okay, fine, but who do you suspect, and what am I supposed to do about it?”

“I have letters from all of them. When someone wants to join the group they’re required to write a letter explaining why they’re interested before they’re allowed in. Many of the ones we get are handwritten. Everyone is supposed to be thoroughly vetted with a proper background check and all. We have a sort of head office to do things like that. I’m just a front man for some of the protests, but they sent me here to look into one of the newer members a bit more. I turned up some information that doesn’t sit right. So, will you take a look? We’ll pay you, of course, whatever your normal fee.”

Anything that involved handwriting naturally piqued Claudia’s curiosity. Having just met the person Dax suspected of spying made her even more interested. “Show me the letters. We can talk about payment later.”

They arrived back at the Eagle and found their way to an empty table back in the RAF room. As it was past the lunch hour, the undergrads who tended to populate the pub were attending classes.

Dax paid for their coffees at the bar and joined Claudia at the table. He reached into his jacket and removed a manila envelope. He dropped it on the table in front of her and, tapping it with his forefinger, said, “Here are the letters. I won’t tell you which is which so we can keep it all unbiased.”

Claudia held out a hand. “I’ll need some time to study them. If these are originals, I’ll return them if you tell me where to send them.”

His face fell in disappointment. “Isn’t there anything you can tell me straight away? Just a thing or two?”

Her irritation at the way he had manipulated her made her hedge a little. “I prefer not to do it that way, but let me have a quick look. I can at least let you know if I see any obvious red flags. I have to caution you, though. Handwriting shows only potential for behavior. I’ll be looking for signs of dishonesty and lack of integrity, but if the person doesn’t feel guilty about their behavior, it may not show up. And even if it does, handwriting can’t predict whether the person will or won’t act on that potential.”

“All right then,” said Dax with a nod of agreement.
