Chapter 11

After Tim moved out, I really thought I was going to hate living alone. I hadn’t been on my own for so long, I figured I would just end up night after night on the couch eating ice cream and Chinese food in the dark. But I have to say, it was kind of nice.

I missed Tim, but it was nice to not have someone complain about dirty dishes in the sink or the trash not being taken out, especially when the complainer could have done it themselves. There was a calmness in the air, and I finally felt like I could breathe a sigh of relief.

I was also able to a do a lot of the stuff I did before I was single, the kind of things that would help me relax after a long day. The things that Tim found boring, such as browsing a bookstore or going for a nice, long walk in the park. Nothing was an emergency anymore, and I wasn’t subject to endless conversations about how wrong I was about everything, or endless calls and texts asking if I did all the tasks I said I was going to do. Not having anyone breathing down my neck was also doing wonders for my mood. Even Laverne noticed how much smiling I was doing lately.

But the best part about the whole situation was that I was able to talk to Kellan freely on the phone without worrying if anyone else was listening around me. Our schedules kept us from meeting up after our first kiss, but that didn’t stop him from calling me every night to say sweet dreams. Well, he said more than that, but he always ended each conversation with “Sleep with the angels.”

“So, how was your day, and don’t leave anything out. Only the boring parts,” Kellan asked during our latest chat.

“It was pretty standard,” I replied. “Nothing out of the ordinary. Laverne keeps asking me when we’re going to get together, and she gets disappointed each time I tell her we haven’t even had our first date yet.”

“Well, maybe we should correct that.” Kellan’s tone of voice changed, which signaled that he was possibly up to something.

“Really, and just how are we going to do that?”

Kellan chuckled a bit nervously. It was so cute. “Maybe I could come over?”

I was caught off-guard. “What, you mean now?”

“Yeah, why not. We keep saying we want to see each other, but we haven’t made time, so why not just jump into it?”

It made sense, and to be honest, having him over might be kind of fun. “Sure, why not? I guess I’ll change.”

“No, stay in your PJs, and I’ll come in mine. We’ll have ourselves a nice little sleep-over.”

* * * *

I was scurrying around, frantically tidying up the place while I waited for Kellan to arrive. I wasn’t sure what the protocol for this was. Should I have run out and gotten some wine? Or maybe Kellan was a beer man? Dammit, I should have asked him.
