Chapter Eight

“Grey and I would like to thank all of you for coming to celebrate the New Year with us. Also, thank you for all your hard work and commitment this year. The company is growing every day and that’s mainly thanks to all of you. We’d also like to say a big thank you to our very first employee. Back when we were working out of a tiny one-room office, this angel answered our ad in the paper and has been keeping us afloat ever since! So thank you, Laura, for planning this party and for all you do. After dinner we have dancing and the gift exchange, so enjoy! Cheers everyone!” Barrett said, lifting his glass.

Laura was touched that Barrett had included her in such a lovely speech, but it couldn’t overshadow how painful it had been to stand on the other side of the room before dinner and watch Paige and Audra drape themselves all over Grey and Barrett at their table. The only thing that would have been worse was to be sitting there close up while it had happened, so she’d stayed mingling with the other workers as long as she could.

“The food was fantastic, Laura. Great job on the menu,” Grey said as the server cleared his plate. He frowned at the mound of food still covering hers. “Are you still not feeling well?”

“Yes, dear, you didn’t really touch your food. Are you okay?” Mary added with a concerned look from across the table.

“I’m okay, just not hungry.” She responded with a forced smile.

It was a shame the dinner she’d carefully picked out had ended up tasting like cardboard in her mouth. She’d mostly moved it around as they listened to Mary and Bob tell them all about the six grandkids they had just visited back in Ontario. Laura loved Mary like a mother, but at the moment it was impossible to engage in the conversation when she’d finally come to the resolution she had no choice but to resign her job. It broke her heart, but it was the only way to avoid disaster.

Every time either Grey or Barrett would cast a glance her way or ask her if everything was all right, she’d smile and say yes, or ask Mary another question about little Bobby Jr. and his tuba class.

“Do I get our traditional first dance of the night again, Laura?” Barrett finally asked with a charming smile.

God, being in his arms would be torture this time instead of the haven it normally was.

“Sure, but if you’d rather switch it up this year and dance with Paige, I’ll understand.” She managed to choke out an answer, hoping that the older couple sitting across from them couldn’t hear any of this.

Barrett frowned at her looking confused. It seemed as though he and Grey were oblivious to the fact that both super skanks Paige and Audra had been hovering nearby waiting for the music to start so that they could pounce on the unsuspecting men.
