CHAPTER 23

HOT. SO HOT. The visor on my hazmat suit needed wipers on the inside to deal with the sweat dripping down the inside of it. My home lab may have been in Texas but the air conditioning there was really good. In Iraq? I blew a strand of hair out of my eye. That was it.

A herculean effort by the team got my lab up and running by midday on… What day was it? Oh, yes. Monday. Figured. Diagnosing seven people with a disease that would most likely kill them made a great start to anybody’s week.

But still, it was an improvement on previous efforts—over breakfast this morning Jed said confusion had reigned so far, with infected people being sent home, and most likely uninfected people being admitted, both of which undoubtedly led to the virus getting its genetic claws into extra victims.

Jed always looked heart-stoppingly gorgeous, but this morning when he’d drunk two cups of coffee in a row, he’d had a tiredness about him I hadn’t seen before. A day’s worth of stubble, shadows under his eyes—this situation was taking its toll on him as well as everyone else, and I didn’t suppose him giving up his bed for me helped. Actually, it didn’t help either of us, because every time I inhaled, I breathed in eau-de-Jed from the sheets, and that kept me awake half the night.

“Is that all the samples?” Clint asked.

Tasked with assisting me in the lab, he was suited up too. We were still learning how each other worked, but so far, he seemed competent.

“For now, yes.”

“Is there anything else to do?”

I looked around the lab. The benches were tidy, and the sun burned through the window, glinting off the rows of sample tubes and their deadly contents. Despite the searing temperature, I shuddered.

“Let’s go. It’s time we got out of these suits before we get heatstroke.”
