Chapter 28
Mathew
Matt pulled into the driveway only to discover his motherâs vehicle missing. A quick call to his mom informed him that she and Selah were getting ready to check out of a store and would be home in fifteen minutes.
Matt decided to use the extra time wisely and scrolled through his contacts until he made it to Paul Richardâs name. He stared at his phone for a minute before taking a deep breath and began speaking to the stirring wheel again.
âI can do this.â He mustered up his courage and pressed the call button.
Calling Addieâs father was the right thing to do, and Matt knew he couldnât go through with the wedding without his approval. However, his palms were sweating, and he was suddenly feeling a little claustrophobic.
He needed air.
Had he turned off the car?
No, he raised his hand to the vent, and the air was flowing out of it. That wasnât the problem. The phone was ringing, and Mattâs mind was starting to spin.
What was he going to say?
âShoot,â Matt said.
He really should have thought of that before he hit the call button. Was it too late to hang up and regroup?
Right before he pulled his phone down to do just that, a deep voice came across the line. âPaul Richards speaking. How can I help you?â
Mathew took a resounding breath; he could do this. âHello, Sir. This is Mathew Gordan. I was hoping to speak to you for a minute. Is now a good time, or would you like me to call back later?â
âMatt Gordan, this is a surprise. What can I do for you?â
âWell, sir,â he cleared his throat, âIâm not exactly sure where to begin.â
âI find the beginning is always a good place to start.â Paul chuckled a little at his joke, which oddly enough put Matt at ease.
The problem was Matt didnât know where the beginning was. âSir, are you aware that my sister, Emily, and Addie had become good friends?â
âYes, sheâs mentioned Emily and Jesse to us quite a bit. Theyâve helped Addie through a challenging time in her life, and my wife and I will forever be grateful to them for that.â
âThank you, Sir. They were amazing and are also partly why Iâm calling you today.â
âWhat do you mean were?â Paul asked puzzled by Mattâs use of the past tense.
Matt went on to explain what had transpired over the past week. âYou see, they left me custody of their twin daughters. Well, they left custody of their twin daughters to both Addie and me.â
Mathew said the last part quietly. He wasnât sure Addieâs dad had heard him until Mr. Richards said, âI see.â
Did he truly see?
Mathew had to make sure he fully understood. âSir, part of the will stipulated that Addie and I get married as quickly as possible. We have talked it over thoroughly, and she has agreed to marry me.â
A slight cough came through the line. âAddieâs agreed to marry you? So, this phone callâ¦â
Matt could hear the questions in the older manâs voice, both those he spoke audibly and those he hadnât put a voice to.
