Whoever approved the title of Starlight’s daily newsletter, Stardate, may or may not have been aware of the word’s Sci-Fi origin. No doubt most of the passengers weren’t, but they did like receiving it as part of their on-board routine, even after it was effectively replaced by Galaxy’s own app which passengers used to check-in, order drinks on deck, locate one another around the ship, and check the daily schedule of events in real-time, all on their own cell phones.

Stardate was just a traditional four-page A4 folded leaflet delivered to each stateroom every evening by the cabin stewards when they came to turn down your bed while the guests were having dinner. It had a colourful, glossy layout packed with information and a few photographs. The back page was always standard ship information; safety advice, locations of services and contact numbers. The front picked out a few of the highlights from the following day’s scheduled events and usually had a message from a member of the crew, as well as a reminder of that day’s dress code in the dining room, plus what time the ship was scheduled to be arriving in port, if at all. Passengers could often be seen carrying their copies around the ship, reading them in bars and lounges, checking out the inside pages for all the detailed information about every event happening on the ship from early morning yoga classes, to table tennis competitions on deck, films being shown on the Lido Deck, to the times of the shows being performed in the theatre.
