Rory picked at a scab near his chin. He whined, ―My dad did. Not me.‖

―Did you corroborate your dad’s story? It’s a serious allegation to label someone

a pedophile.‖

―No way,‖ Rory shouted, his hands waving, his feet shifting back and forth. ―I

told you, nothing ever happened. I’m already getting enough shit from my

teammates without you coming down on me too. I’m not queer.‖ He scrunched his

nose as if that word alone would turn him into one.

Christ. Titan wondered if the same expression crossed his face when talking

with Chandler about coming out.

Rory chewed his thumbnail. ―Mr. Stowe never did anything to me. I tried to

tell my dad.‖ He kicked a rock on the grass. ―I really liked art. I was good.‖

Titan’s temper vanished when he heard the distress in Rory’s voice. The kid

would miss his art class. Titan knew all about having a passion, and it was a rare

gift. He had it for football, and Chandler had it for art. And Rory, he was just

discovering what it was that made him feel fulfilled. He wouldn’t be the one to

quash it at such a young age.

―I’m sorry about the art class. Once this all calms down, you might be able to

take it up again.‖

Rory’s green eyes darkened. ―Why can’t I do both? Dad never listens to me. He

just blames Mr. Stowe for putting ideas into my head.‖

―And what ideas are those?‖

―Me being good enough to get into art school.‖

―Your dad’s not saying anything else about Mr. Stowe that’s not true?‖

Rory dug his toe into the grass and wouldn’t look at Titan. ―Nah, he’s just

steamed.‖

―You know it’s important to speak the truth. No matter what your father

thinks about the situation.‖

―Yeah, Coach, sure. Mr. Stowe didn’t do nothing.‖
