“I’M NOT MUCH of a dancer,” Tyler said.

“You were doing all right with A.J. and Tony and Sam.” He’d pulled each one of his cousins over for a little talk afterwards. Drawing her with him, he ducked behind a trellis and pressed the button on the penthouse elevator.

“Where are we? The dance floor’s back there.”

“I have a place I want to take you to.”

“Now? We can’t. What if the kidnappers try to get in touch with us? It’s—” she paused to glance at her watch “—eleven forty-five. That’s nearly tomorrow.”

He tapped the cell phone in his pocket. “If they send a message to the Plaza, Harry will call us. And I doubt they’ll be calling at the stroke of midnight. They want you tense and worried so you’ll do what they say.”

“Your family—”

“My mother was the one who suggested that we sneak out the back way. Lucy nearly dozed off twice in my arms during that last dance. She doesn’t want the evening to end.”

“She doesn’t want her brother to leave,” Tyler said.

The understanding in her eyes had the need building in him to touch her, to really touch her. He satisfied himself by running a finger down the earring she was wearing. “We both need to escape—just for a little while. So here’s the plan.”

Her brows rose. “You’ve got a plan?”

“I can be a very methodical kind of guy,” he said as the elevator doors slid open and he urged her through them.

Her unladylike response made him grin. “I’d be willing to bet that Sheridans don’t snort.”

“I’ve done a lot of things Sheridans don’t do since I met you.”

Nick raised her fingers to his lips. “It’s just the beginning, sugar.”

Her hand was trembling as she drew it away and lowered it to her side. “Let’s hear the plan.”

“We get in a taxi and go to this dance club I know.”

Tyler was shaking her head as the elevator stopped and the doors opened. “And? What happens when we get to the club?”

Nick shot her a grin. “We enjoy living in the moment.”

THE CELL PHONE RANG just as they got out of the cab. Music was pouring through the open door of the club, so Nick steered Tyler into the shelter of the nearest doorway. She didn’t immediately reach for the phone. “Do you think it could be the kidnappers?”

“I don’t think so.”

The phone rang for the second time.

“If it is,” Nick continued, “try to keep them talking. Concentrate on the voice and see if you can recognize it. Make the caller repeat everything. Got it?”

She nodded, taking the phone as it rang for the third time. “Hello?”

Nick saw the immediate easing of the tension in her shoulders.

“Howard? I can hardly hear you…” A burst of static exploded in her ear that even he heard. “What?” To Nick she said, “He’s in Manhattan, but I can hardly hear him—What? 422…422-5718.” Lowering the phone, she punched in numbers. “I’m going to call him back and see if we can get a better connection.
