âIâM NOT MUCH of a dancer,â Tyler said.
âYou were doing all right with A.J. and Tony and Sam.â Heâd pulled each one of his cousins over for a little talk afterwards. Drawing her with him, he ducked behind a trellis and pressed the button on the penthouse elevator.
âWhere are we? The dance floorâs back there.â
âI have a place I want to take you to.â
âNow? We canât. What if the kidnappers try to get in touch with us? Itâsââ she paused to glance at her watch ââeleven forty-five. Thatâs nearly tomorrow.â
He tapped the cell phone in his pocket. âIf they send a message to the Plaza, Harry will call us. And I doubt theyâll be calling at the stroke of midnight. They want you tense and worried so youâll do what they say.â
âYour familyââ
âMy mother was the one who suggested that we sneak out the back way. Lucy nearly dozed off twice in my arms during that last dance. She doesnât want the evening to end.â
âShe doesnât want her brother to leave,â Tyler said.
The understanding in her eyes had the need building in him to touch her, to really touch her. He satisfied himself by running a finger down the earring she was wearing. âWe both need to escapeâjust for a little while. So hereâs the plan.â
Her brows rose. âYouâve got a plan?â
âI can be a very methodical kind of guy,â he said as the elevator doors slid open and he urged her through them.
Her unladylike response made him grin. âIâd be willing to bet that Sheridans donât snort.â
âIâve done a lot of things Sheridans donât do since I met you.â
Nick raised her fingers to his lips. âItâs just the beginning, sugar.â
Her hand was trembling as she drew it away and lowered it to her side. âLetâs hear the plan.â
âWe get in a taxi and go to this dance club I know.â
Tyler was shaking her head as the elevator stopped and the doors opened. âAnd? What happens when we get to the club?â
Nick shot her a grin. âWe enjoy living in the moment.â
THE CELL PHONE RANG just as they got out of the cab. Music was pouring through the open door of the club, so Nick steered Tyler into the shelter of the nearest doorway. She didnât immediately reach for the phone. âDo you think it could be the kidnappers?â
âI donât think so.â
The phone rang for the second time.
âIf it is,â Nick continued, âtry to keep them talking. Concentrate on the voice and see if you can recognize it. Make the caller repeat everything. Got it?â
She nodded, taking the phone as it rang for the third time. âHello?â
Nick saw the immediate easing of the tension in her shoulders.
âHoward? I can hardly hear youâ¦â A burst of static exploded in her ear that even he heard. âWhat?â To Nick she said, âHeâs in Manhattan, but I can hardly hear himâWhat? 422â¦422-5718.â Lowering the phone, she punched in numbers. âIâm going to call him back and see if we can get a better connection.
