CHAPTER NINE
~ The Recovery ~
SANAA WOKE UP AND RUBBED her lower belly that was still hurting, and she was rankling on the events that unfolded yesterday. She got up and sat on the side of the bed. She looked over to her husband and saw that he was still fast asleep. As a yawn came, she put her palm over her mouth. She felt empty. She couldnât forget how abruptly she lost the one thing she wanted so badly. She felt a puddle underneath her and she knew she had to clean herself up. Forcing herself to get up, she made a beeline to the restroom and washed her face and brushed her teeth â she took a long hot shower and put on a fresh, extra thick sanitary pad. Sanaa knew that tampons shouldnât be used for this type of bleeding, the lochia of miscarriage. She made it back to her bed, changed the sheets and then sat back down on the edge. She gazed at the alarm clock that occupied the nightstand and it displayed 6:45 a.m. She felt fatigued and was an emotional wreck â tears flowed freely again, making little rivers down her smooth cheeks. Gauging if she could function efficiently in the office, she decided that going to work was nowhere on her agenda today. She reached the final verdict to call in to her job so she could take the day off to relax â and she did after getting a grip on herself. Just then, Oâshay stirred from his sleep and then sprang up and looked at the woman he married. He knew that she had been crying. Cupping Sanaaâs cute and dainty face in his hands, Oâshay said softly, âBae, please darling. I canât see you like this.â Sanaa buried her face in his chest and wept bitterly. He let her let it all out, stroking her hair and holding her close.
When Sanaa visibly calmed down, Oâshay told her to lie on the bed while he made breakfast. He scrambled some eggs, made cheese toast, grits and sausage patties and greeted his wife with a plateful. He fed her and she ate quietly. Sanaa reveled in her husbandâs tender, loving care.
Fearing the silence would consume them, Oâshay asked Sanaa how the food tasted and she replied,
âItâs good Oâshay. Youâre a wonderful cook.â
âHow long have you been up?â He asked with great concern.
âNot that long.â Sanaa was curt.
âDid you get enough sleep?â
âI think so. What about you?â
âI donât remember when I dozed off babe. Maybe around one am.â
âYou were awake that long?â Sanaa stared at Oâshay as he stuffed another morsel of scrambled egg in her mouth.
âI donât remember exactly honey.â He brushed off a bread crumb from her lip.
âRight. Well, Iâm not going to work today.â
âYes darling, I was about to recommend that. Iâm glad that you decided that,â Sanaa motioned for something to drink and Oâshay rushed out and returned with a glass of soy milk.
Sanaa gulped half a glass of the vanilla almond milk down and said feebly âOâshay, I apologize for last night.
