“Wow, you’re taking me to the space museum?”
Callum bounced in his seat as Ian parked the pickup. He was freaking adorable as usual, but his excitement took it to another level. “How did you know I loved that stuff?”
“You mean, besides the Star Wars ringtone on your phone, your underwear with the Doctor Who telephone booth, and the bookcase full of Star Trek books I saw in your bedroom?”
Callum laughed. “My geeky secret’s out, huh?”
“Oh, yeah. Plus, you work in a lab, and you make chemistry jokes. I figured anything science and technology would be in your wheelhouse.”
“You’re not wrong,” Callum said. He continued to grin as they got out of the car and approached the entrance to the space museum. “This dating thing is off to a good start.”
Callum was like a kid in a candy store, and the funny thing was, he already knew most of the information the museum had on display. From the authentic SR-71A Blackbird supported by large columns to hover over their heads in the lobby to the extensive exhibits about the space race between the US and Russia, Callum had some small remark to add.
“Crazy to think that Germany with all its atrocities put us on the path to space, isn’t it?” He shook his head as they looked at the exhibit about people who lived, suffered and died in labor camps to create missiles that were later used as the basis for the first rockets launched by the US and Russia.
“We’d have gotten there eventually either way, don’t you think?”
“Maybe, but the US snagged most of Germany’s rocket scientists at the end of World War II. Stalin was pissed. He planned to do the same, but we got there first. There’s an exhibit up ahead about it. He got hold of some research and lower-level scientists, if I remember right, and then we both set out to best one another during the Space Race.”
“Huh. I never knew that.”
The museum was an amazing collection of space artifacts used by astronauts through the ages and history lessons of how the space program developed. But Ian couldn’t help being more fascinated by Callum’s enthusiasm than the exhibits before them.
“Let’s go look at the astronaut paraphernalia,” Callum suggested. “I used to always dream of being an astronaut when I was a kid, and it’s more uplifting than reading about Nazi missiles.”
“So, why didn’t you become an astronaut?”
“Eh, life happened. What little boy doesn’t want to be a cowboy or an astronaut or a firefighter, right?”
Ian snorted. “My brother’s a firefighter.”
“Oh yeah? You didn’t mention that. Daniel or Sean?”
“Sean.” Ian rolled his eyes. “He tends to run headlong into things. Ma was pissed for a long time, I’ll tell you that. She didn’t want her boys risking their lives like their father did.”
“Understandable.”
“Sean is impulsive, though. He met someone who was like, ‘You’re fit, you should go into firefighting,’ and he enrolled in a program the next day.”
“Maybe he’s just decisive.”
Ian snorted. “He probably thought it would get him laid.
