landing would ruin your water supply?” I ask. “We didn’t have to land, if it was going to inconvenience you…”

Conlan shrugs. “It was a risk I was willing to take,” he says softly.

He’s turned away from me as he watches the others at the airlock and

I can see thin lines carved around his mouth and eyes, worried into

him, making him older than he should be. “Ramsey’s wrong, the

take-off won’t taint the water that much more. It shouldn’t, really,

and by the time they land again, the filtration system might even be

able to handle it, we’ll see.”

A few feet away, Maclin opens the airlock door, holds it while

Shanley and Parker enter. Shanley gives us a thumbs up before he

disappears into the chamber—an actual thumbs up, how scary is

that? “You watch how you handle my ship,” Dylan calls out but

Parker dismisses that with a wave of his hand. “He’s going to wreck

it,” Dylan mutters to no one in particular. “I should be going.” He

nudges my foot with his and adds, “You, too.”

I give him a wan smile and shake my head. Not now, I think, and

he must get my drift because he sighs and glares at the floor, occu-

pies himself with picking at the leg of my jumpsuit like a kid—pull-

ing the fabric out so it tents beneath his fingers, then letting it fall

back into place against my thigh. As Maclin closes the door and

Ellington starts up the decon cycle, I tell Conlan, “A few hours, noth-

ing more. How’s Marie holding up?”

“Fine,” Conlan whispers.

I don’t know what else to say. A dull whine starts up in the airlock,

the cycle kicking into full force, and Dylan nudges my foot again but

I don’t pay him any attention. “It’s worth the risk,” he mumbles, pick

pick picking at my jumpsuit, and when I do look at him, he’s frown-

ing at the material as he lets it fall from his fingers. “You could’ve

told us we’d fuck up your water,” he says, so low that I’m not sure if

he’s talking to himself or Conlan. “We didn’t have to land. Then no

one would hate us—”

“We had your med files,” Conlan explains. “We knew Shanley was

a physician. To me, that’s all that mattered. We’ve never…you have

to understand, we’ve never had a physician here before. The colony med team died from the bleed like everyone else. We get by with

what we have, the annals and data logs, but we don’t really know

what we’re doing.” With a bitter laugh, he says, “Just kids playing

doctor, that’s all we are.”

That makes Dylan smile. Turning to me so Conlan can’t hear him,

he takes my hand and pulls me closer, his eyes sparkling. “You ever

play that when you were little?” he asks, and the wicked way he’s

grinning at me, the way he rubs up against me so I can feel what he’s thinking, it’s coiled below his waist and pressing into my hip, that

makes it so hard to keep him at bay.

Clearing his throat, Conlan continues as if Dylan’s not all over me

right this second. “If this briox works, it’ll be worth a few hours’

thirst.
