Chapter Seven

BONECRUSHER TRIED TO rush forward and close the door, but the man with the flowing white hair pushed his way past Rosemary. The only way Bonecrusher would be able to block him would be by mowing her down. Instead, Bonecrusher reached out in an attempt to protect her from the other man, who was shoving her aside, but Bonecrusher was too late. The man pushed her out of the way and stepped into the house.

“I beg your pardon?” Rosemary groused at the intruder. “You can’t just barge in here.”

“I certainly can.”

“Ye be okay?” Bonecrusher asked Rosemary, helping her to right herself.

“I’m fine. Who the hell is this?”

“He be...from my world.” For the first time, Colton saw true terror in his champion’s eyes.

“Does he have a name?” Rosemary asked.

“Of course I do.” He drew a deep breath through his nose, like a posh man sniffing at some minor slight. “I am Happy Honey Hop and he”—the intruder pointed at Bonecrusher—“doesn’t belong in your world.”

“Who, Bonecrusher?” Rosemary closed the door, probably so the neighbors wouldn’t get an eyeful or an earful, then she urged everyone out of the foyer and into the living room.

“Bonecrusher?” Happy snorted like a horse. “His name is Sweet Bubbles Sunshine.”

Bonecrusher’s proud posture seemed to fold in, taking a good foot off his commanding height. He kept his eyes on Happy but from a lowered brow.

“I think right now his name doesn’t matter.” Colton felt for Bonecrusher. No wonder he’d changed his name. Sweet Bubbles Sunshine made him sound like something from the Saturday morning cartoon lineup.

“You are in so much trouble.” Happy glared at Bonecrusher the way an angry teacher would a disruptive student.

“Hold on here.” Rosemary tried again to intervene, only to be rudely pushed aside again.

“Stay out of this, human.”

“Ye touch her one more time, brother mine, and I be—”

“You be what?” Happy interrupted. “You be nothing because that’s not how you say it.” He snorted again. “The elders might have indulged your—your—eccentricities, but they’re out and the new leadership will have no more of your shenanigans.”

Bonecrusher clenched his teeth together to stay quiet, but the fire in his eyes spoke volumes.

“I can’t believe they let you speak with that ridiculous accent, not to mention adopt a name that simply defies credulity, meanwhile, you don’t participate in any of the glitter activities, you traipse off to the human world without proper authorization, and then dye your hair that disgusting color.”

“That’s enough.” Colton stepped in front of Bonecrusher. “I don’t care who you are, you can’t just come into my house—my mother’s house,” he corrected, “And start shoving my mother around and then picking on my champion.”

“Champion?” Happy threw back his head and laughed just the way Colton would expect a horse in a human body to laugh. “He’s no champion. He’s a low level silly hooves who thinks he’s some kind of virgin defender when the only thing he’s ever done is cause trouble for our herd.”

“I don’t care.” Colton planted his hands on his hips and got right in Happy’s face.
