Chapter 21

They tried everything from the vampire turning process to dark magic to bring Quay back from the dead, but it was no use. She was gone, leaving a little supernatural baby alone in the world without a mother or father. It was hard to say who was hit the hardest by Quay’s death. Hours after her passing, Tau was mute and inconsolable, and Muslee was screaming outside in the storm in an unbridled fit of rage.

As painful as it was, Zoe and Moore moved Quay’s body to the basement of the activity center for preparation for burial. The second wave of mourning came when Gaia, Professor Prentice, and Andy returned to Omni Lodge from their shopping trip. Gaia wailed, and Andy passed out in shock. Quay and the baby had been a beacon of light and hope for all of them. She represented everything that was good and right in their world. Word of Quay’s death spread quickly within their circle of friends, and Giovanni and Hung, who were on their honeymoon, were the last to be notified.

“Giovanni, I have some terrible news for you,” Zander said. He heard Giovanni call Hung.

“What is it?” Giovanni asked.

“Quay died during childbirth,” Zander said. The words sounded foreign and vile coming out of his mouth. Silence followed Zander’s announcement.

“How is everyone doing?” Giovanni finally asked.

“Not very good. You know how much we all loved her,” Zander said, struggling to speak of Quay in the past tense.

“When is the funeral?” Giovanni asked.

“We’re going to have the funeral service two nights from now here at Omni Lodge,” Zander said.

“How is the baby?” Giovanni asked.

“He is…fine. You know how much Quay confided in Andy. She told him that if it was a boy she was going to name him Stormy. I guess it is kind of fitting that he was born on a stormy night,” Zander said.

“Stormy Knight Long—that is a beautiful name for a little baby boy, but I know you. What are you not telling me?” Giovanni asked, recognizing something in his best friend’s tone.

“Quay was in a lot of pain. Muslee tried to save her…” Zander started.

“…and Muslee gave Quay venom, didn’t she?” Giovanni finished.

“Yes, and I think it turned the baby,” Zander said.

“What makes you say that? How do you know?” Giovanni asked.

“First, he was born in a cocoon. And then when Muslee pulled the cocoon off, he was covered in a colorful mist just like the one that surrounds me sometimes,” Zander said.

“I’ll be damned,” Giovanni said.

“Oh, and we can already see the indentations in his gums where his little fangs are going to come in,” Zander said.

“Do you think he is the Unum?” Giovanni asked.

“I hadn’t really thought about it until now, but he could be,” Zander said.

“The good news is that he has lots of shifter, vampire, and magical aunties and uncles to take care of him,” Giovanni said.

“Yes, he does,” Zander said. He could always rely on Giovanni to make him feel better.

“Hung and I will be home as soon as we can.
