Block yard working out. He had lost a few pounds since being in the hole,

but that only added more definition to his 6 foot 1, 187 pound frame. Ram’s greatest stress reliever was working out, because it put his mind and body

on the same wave length.

After his 47th push-up, someone called him by the name his mama

gave him.

“Ramsey Hall! Where you at?” came a voice from Ram’s left. Ram got

to his feet and saw a tall, Caucasian guy in street clothes walking towards

his cage.

“What’s up?” Ram said with a nod.

“I’m Special Hearing Officer Clark, you do know that you have a DDU

hearing today, right?” the man said.

Ram shrugged and said, “Whenever, whatever.”

Clark looked at his watch and said, “I’ll be able to get you out of the way

right now if you want.”

Ram thought about how he said,” get you out of the way,” like it was a

Mafia hit or something. “Like I said, whenever,” Ram said, dropping down

into another set of push-ups. Ram then heard the soles of Clark’s wingtips

crunching the asphalt of the yard as he walked away. Ram finished his set

and began to pace back and forth in his “kennel.” “Hey Ram! You going to see ‘the Executioner’ today huh?”

Ram looked over to the next cage and saw a little, white dude named

“Gilligan” laid out on a uniform shirt, trying to get a tan. Gilligan was on

Ram’s tier, and he was what people called a “med head.” He would take all

kinds of pills for a quick fix, and since “psyche meds” were all over the

place, he was always wheeling and dealing in search of the next high.

“Yeah Gill, I’m gonna’ go in here and let ol’ boy put his knife in my back,”

Ram said.

“Yeah he’s a real piece of work that fuckin’ Clark. The other screw

who usually does the hearings been on vacation. Since then this fucking

guy Clark has been burying guys in DDU. My buddy Stevie Caniglione got

three years in DDU for hitting a guy with a cribbage board, AFTER the

other guy stabbed him three times,” Gilligan said with a disgusted look on

his face. Ram shook his head from side to side, while at the same time, he

took what Gilligan said with a grain of salt.

Ram knew that Gilligan had a tendency to embellish a story, and he

also knew he was better off keeping his dealings with most of the white

prisoners on a surface level. Since Ram’s altercation involved a white prisoner, racial tension had reared its ugly head a few times over the past

few months.

Fortunately, Jonny Walker, the white guy that Ram beat into the

fourth dimension, was not well liked even amongst the white prisoners, but

the incident still didn’t sit well with everybody.
