The Trouble with Tires

49 pulled right to the stairs of Pike’s hotel. As Pike started to unbuckle, Kittrick turned off the engine. “I saw how you reacted to the gun firing. You handled it well.” He glanced over to Pike, who was now hiding with his head down. 49 started the engine. “I just want to say, good job today. Get some sleep. See you at five.”

Pike slowly turned his head and grumbled, “Five?”

49 gave it right back. “Doesn’t have to be five. I can pick you up at four. Get a few hours on the range. Might do you some good. You know, work on that muscle memory.”

Pike quickly opened the door. “Five is good, sir. See you in the morning,” he called as he darted in front of the Jeep and up the stairs.

49 muttered, “Yeah, that’s what I thought.” He backed up and drove away.

Pike held onto another hour of peace before dealing with the mess back home. His arms were not so sore now and he managed to give himself a decent shave. As he wiped his face, he saw his phone light up. It was time, or she would just keep calling.

“Mom . . . I know . . . stop . . . Mom . . . I’ll hang up.” She stopped. “Look, I know I should have said something.”

“Ya think? What is that girl doing back? You kicked her out. You are finally getting your life together. That girl is just going to bring you right back to zero.”

“Mom, we aren’t back together. Just leave her alone until I get back. I will deal with it then.”

“Pike! That is not your house. It’s your father’s. He does not want her in there with you down there. She must leave.”

Pike sighed and raked his fingers through his hair. “She has nowhere to go.”

Pike’s mother barked, “That’s not your problem. Who is going to pay for the house while you are there?”

“I will.”

“I stopped by that market you worked for. They are keeping your check because you abandoned the truck. Your boss claimed that whole load of produce spoiled. You are lucky he’s not taking you to court.”

“Mom, I’ll be home in two weeks. I will deal with it then. Leave Jackie alone.”

“Your father said –”

“I’ll call Dad. Stay out of it.”

“But –”

“Mom, I mean it. If I lose this job because of this shit you are stirring up, you will never see me again.” Silence on the other end. “Now, stay out of it and leave her alone.”

“Call your father.” Pike’s mother hung up.

Pike scrolled through his contacts and called his father.

Kris Evans was much more relaxed about what was going on back in Massachusetts than his wife. He offered again for Pike to come live with him. Pike rejected his offer and informed him he was going to look in North Carolina or Virginia for a place. Pike asked his father if he would hold off putting the house up for sale for a few weeks.
