It was nearly lunchtime when Nikki finally arrived at Gateway. She squeezed her jeep into the first available space and killed the engine. She was halfway to the front door when Drew Barnes walked outside, looking at his phone.

“Just the person I came to see,” Nikki said.

Drew looked up in surprise, and fear flickered in his eyes. “Agent Hunt. I didn’t expect to see you again.”

“Really?” Nikki asked. “Because you look scared.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Listen,” Nikki said. “I’ve had a long day, and it’s barely noon. Let’s cut to the chase. We found your fingerprints in Dana Rhodes’ apartment. I need to know when you were there and why.”

Drew looked deflated. “I knew this would happen. My prints are in the system from the stupid DUI, right?”

Nikki nodded. “Let’s go inside and talk.”

“Can we talk out here? I don’t want Randall finding out. I could lose my job.”

Wet snow had started to fall, and Nikki hadn’t bothered to put her coat on. “Come sit in my jeep. It’s cold and wet.”

Drew nodded, and Nikki unlocked the doors. He sat down in the passenger seat with a nervous look on his face. “My fingerprints are in her apartment, so I’m a suspect,” he said flatly.

“Yep,” she replied. “You said you didn’t have a relationship with her, but you were in her apartment, and you didn’t tell police where she lived. That doesn’t exactly make you look innocent.”

“We didn’t have a relationship,” Drew said. “I mean, we were friendly but not close.”

“You weren’t having some kind of sexual relationship?” Nikki asked.

“I’m gay,” he said flatly, relaxing a little. “I need this job. Randall was livid when I got the DUI. It’s not exactly great PR for a sober living house. I convinced him to give me another chance. I don’t drink much, and my boyfriend at the time was supposed to be the designated driver. But he was so drunk, I was afraid to get in the car. I barely blew over the legal limit.”

“Everyone makes dumb decisions,” Nikki said. “I just need you to be honest about Dana.”

He shrugged. “She didn’t tell me her deep dark secrets if that’s what you’re thinking, but I knew she was working her ass off to get Kellan back. Sorry for my language.”

He was so sincere, Nikki had to fight back a smile. “Were you here when Randall had to ask her to leave?”

“It was awful. She was just unhinged. Normally she was an even keel kind of person. She put a lot of work into trying to handle her emotions and not get back into bad habits. But she snapped. She threw a stapler at Randall.”

“How did he handle that?”

“Gracefully,” Drew said. “Randall is a good guy. He’s very compassionate. He told Dana that if she got sober again and went into rehab, he would make sure she had a place. But it didn’t matter. She packed her things and left. Cam went after her, and he told us the next day he knew where she was and that she was safe.
