The storm. That was his excuse for rushing them back to the barn. He rode hell-bent-for-leather and once they got back, the storm turned out to be just some rumbling in the distance. They both unsaddled their horses and one of the hands told Nick his brother Trey had left word that he wanted to talk to him. Nick had given her a distracted kiss on the forehead—forehead!—and left her.

She wasn’t an idiot; she knew something had gone wrong. But what? How could an experience that had reaffirmed for her that she’d made the right choice in leaving Oklahoma and coming here, have made Nick run for the hills?

It would have been funny if it had been happening to him with any other woman. But it wasn’t any other woman standing here wondering WTF, it was her.

She walked into the house and found Meggie baking chocolate chip cookies and talking to a woman with a chic sense of style. They were discussing the merits of mixing dark chocolate chips with milk chocolate to create the ultimate cookie.

Martina seemed to add to the conversations by making her sweet, little baby babble and waving her hands as she did so.

“Hello, Meggie. How was Martina?”

“She was wonderfully sweet. Do you know Chloe?” Meggie asked. “She’s friends with Juliette and Ariana. They own Lavender House. You might have seen the fields of lavender when you drove out here.”

She had seen the lovely fields of lavender and, of course, in her room at the B&B there had been lavender scented amenities supplied by Lavender Dream. And since she’d been avoiding contacting Nick that first night she’d read the brochure that had been placed in room about the lotion and bath gel and the company that made them.

“We haven’t met,” Reba said, walking over to scoop her baby up from the carrier that she was sitting in.

Martina gave her a drool-filled smile and once Reba had her little girl cuddled close to her she felt better. She was still battered and slightly bruised by the way Nick had pulled his disappearing act—again—but she didn’t feel so alone now.

“Nice to meet you. I’ve been enjoying holding your little girl. I always thought I’d have kids by this age,” Chloe said.

“It’s not like you’re out of time,” Reba said.

“Some days it feels like it,” Chloe remarked. “I guess I should be heading to town. I’m going to a kickboxing class that starts in an hour.”

Reba had never been to a gym in her life. She worked on a ranch, rode horses, and, frankly, didn’t need to work out, but she needed something. She wanted to get away from Kelly everything and wondered if she could tag along.

Ugh.

Insecurity swamped her, and she realized she felt the way she always did with a group of women. Like an outsider. It wasn’t anything Meggie or Chloe were doing, it was her. She had no idea how to talk to other women. She liked girly things, she had her sweet daughter, but making casual conversation, a big, fat nope.
