Chapter Eight

Nancy Logan stared at the skeins of baby-soft yarn in her hand and fought against the tears that burned the back of her throat. She already had the pattern and the needles in her basket, but she couldn’t decide between the butter yellow and the mint green.Not a life-altering decision by any stretch of the imagination and not one that would have her on the verge of tears on an ordinary day. Then again, she hadn’t had many “ordinary” days in the last few months — and none at all since Robbie had gone.

She had his letter in her purse, had been carrying it everywhere with her since it had arrived in the mail three days earlier. A letter she’d read so many times now that she had the words memorized, but she still pulled it out of the envelope every chance she got, just to look at the writing. Sometimes she’d trace a finger over the bold script, as if touching the paper he had touched would convince her he wasn’t so very far away.

And maybe he wasn’t. She really didn’t know because she had no idea where he’d gone. The letter had been postmarked Las Vegas, but she knew that only proved he’d been there when he’d dropped it into the mail.

Maybe he was still there. Maybe he was halfway to the East coast. Or maybe he was finally heading home.

No, as much as her heart ached to believe that he would find his way back to her, she knew he was still moving in the other direction.
