Twenty-Nine

ADDISON

I hugged him for a long time, wrapping myself around his long, spidery frame. My heart weighed a thousand pounds, and it hurt like crazy. But I could feel his aching even more, beating against mine.

“Finn, I’m so sorry.”

He held me, nodding into my shoulder. Sniffling here and there, but not breaking down, not crying.

Holy crap, I thought to myself. I’m the worst friend ever.

When he finally let go he still wouldn’t look at me. I left him staring at our feet, eyes glassy. The silence stretching out for a long time, before I finally spoke.

“What happened?”

He cleared his throat, straightening his body in an effort to compose himself. Once he started speaking again, it was like he couldn’t stop.

“She got sick, Addy. Real sick. And she went fast, thank God. Faster than even the doctors gave her, which wasn’t much at all.”

Now I was crying. Almost bawling.

“Finn…”

“I’d just talked to her the week before, you know? We had this thing — we never went a week without a phone call. If we did, the other person had to make it up. She’d cook for me, anything I wanted. Or when I got back to town, I’d have to take her to dinner. Any restaurant she chose.” He wiped his eyes and chuckled. “That was the deal, too. No budget. Only she always wanted something cheap, like the drive-through. Or that sit-down Chinese restaurant with the Formica tables, and the fish tanks all covered in algae, and—”

“Oh Finn…”

I squeezed him hard, wishing I could take away his pain. Realizing that he was even closer with Gemma than he ever let on, and if I were being truthful, he’d let on quite a bit over the years.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” I asked gently. “We would’ve come running! We would’ve—”

“I know you would,” he cut in. “But I didn’t want you to. You and Damon had the wedding coming up, and Saxon was so busy with his restaurant I couldn’t bear to bother him with the news. The last thing I wanted was him flying out for a funeral. It’s not how I like to see you guys, anyway.”

“But—”

“The worst part was not being here for her,” said Finnegan. “Not getting back in time to say our last goodbyes. And then I stayed for a while, because apparently there was a will. And she left me the house, Addison. This woman who’d done nothing but be there for me her entire life… her last act was to leave me everything that she had.”

“But you were there for her too,” I insisted. “The first time, when she had that scare? You went right home.” I squeezed him tighter. “You’ve been taking care of each other all your lives, Finn. When your parents flaked out, she took you in. But you took her in. You were always there when she needed you.”

My words didn’t seem to be sinking in, at least at first. But I felt him relax somewhat. Little by little, he regained control.
