Another day, another party.

The catering van’s parked out front when I get back from my run. Weights alone weren’t cutting it today. I’d been more on edge than ever after yesterday’s run-in with Leo.

And Addie. As if I could forget Addie.

Leo I’d expected. He’s always looking for a fight with me. Addie . . . that’s another story.

That kiss is burned into my skull. But I can’t stop thinking about the hurt look in her eyes before I walked away either. That look has been haunting me for the last twenty-four hours, and I’m itching for a fight to get rid of this feeling. But I’m still pissed at her too.

I shouldn’t be. I don’t even know why I am. I stopped expecting anything from anyone a long time ago. But for some reason, I’d still expected more from her.

But no. Addie’s just another suck-up pushover. And she was using me.

I shake my head and slow my pace as I reach the front door.

The guests haven’t started arriving yet, but Leo’s parents are here. Rich’s cherry red Maserati isn’t exactly easy to miss and it’s parked right next to the Jeep my biological father gifted me out of guilt.

Part of me had wanted to throw it back in his face. Maybe I would have if he’d presented it with some sort of speech. But in true Rudy fashion, he’d avoided all interaction with me, muttering something about how I’d need a ride to get around town before heading back to his office.

So I kept it, because while I might be bitter as hell toward the old man, I’m not a total idiot. I do need a ride if I’m to have any freedom around here. And the best part about this new Jeep? I can sell it for cash when I turn eighteen.

I head straight to my room to change, but the second I come back out into the hallway, I hear their voices from the living room.

“He started another fight with my son,” Rich says.

I stop out of sight, just beside the doorway. It doesn’t take a genius to know they’re talking about me.

Though the fact that I picked a fight with Leo is news. I’d stayed in my room last night, skipping family dinner with good ol’ Rudy and Marsha.

“Not now, Richard,” Marsha says with an exasperated sigh.

My lips twitch. Is it juvenile to enjoy Rich’s scolding? Yeah. Definitely. But ask me if I care.

“It’s not just Leo I’m worried about,” Rich says.

I roll my eyes upward and find myself staring at a chandelier. Worried about poor little Leo, is he? How sweet.

“Leo says he’s dating someone?” Eloise adds this tentatively. Her voice is a million times softer than Rich’s, and she sounds concerned.

“That’s news to us,” Marsha says slowly.

As usual, Marsha’s speaking on behalf of Rudy too. I can count the words I’ve heard Rudy say on one hand since I’ve arrived. Marsha’s covered the rest.

“A nice girl,” Rich mutters. “She’s the hospital director’s daughter, did you know that?”

This causes a reaction from someone.
